Over 200 students from Paksabmai Primary and High School joined hands with members of the Faculty of Agriculture, National University of Laos on 30 November for a joint climate action.
Organized as part of the European Union (EU) Green Diplomacy Weeks in ASEAN 2024, “Greening the Future” initiative also provided participants with a planting workshop to learn about the different native plant species and their ecological benefits, and an interactive discussion with environmental experts on climate action and reforestation.
The EU Green Diplomacy Week is one of Europe’’s global campaigns to promote cooperation on climate change and inspire meaningful action. This annual event has evolved into a significant occasion where the EU and its member states host a series of events worldwide, fostering dialogue and collaboration on climate issues. These events serve as a platform to showcase successful sustainability initiatives and motivate further green actions.
Compared to other ASEAN counties, Laos recorded very low greenhouse gas emissions, but the number continues to show an upward trend. Adoption of the National Green Growth Strategy (NGGS) in 2019 provided the country with a national guide to reduce Laos’s vulnerability to climate change, while promoting economic growth and poverty reduction.
“The European Union is committed to supporting our partners in their respective green transitions, including ASEAN Member States,” said EU Ambassador to ASEAN Sujiro Seam. “This event shows our commitment to continue working together with ASEAN towards a greener, sustainable and inclusive future. It is an opportunity to encourage and motivate individuals, communities and organizations to take stronger actions – to protect, preserve and restore our environment, for now and for future generations.”
The Greening the Future event concluded with a collaborative art project, where students painted eco-themed murals to inspire further climate actions.
