Laos has made progress in its fight against drugs, with 21,003 cases handled and 31,289 suspects arrested between July 2021 and October 2025, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Security Vilay Lakhamfong reported on 12 November.

Speaking at the National Assembly, Vilay highlighted police’s confiscation of substantial quantities of illegal drugs, including 69,261 kg of methamphetamine, 27,626 kg of cannabis, 17,386 kg of crystal meth, and 1,852 kg of heroin.

Authorities also seized 649 vehicles, 3,377 motorbikes, and five boats used for trafficking.

In addition to cracking down on drug-related cases, Laos has also focused on rehabilitating individuals struggling with addiction. Over the past four years, 15 drug rehabilitation centers treated 34,678 individuals, with 20,301 successfully completing treatment and returning home.

Meanwhile, three centers in Phongsaly, Xieng Khouang, and Savannakhet Provinces have been upgraded, while two new centres opened in Sekong and Vientiane provinces.

At the community level, 28 counselling units in six provinces held 2,567 sessions for drug users, with plans to expand to Houaphanh Province.
