Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone agreed to deepen cooperation on human resource development, energy security and economic resilience during talks in Tokyo on 10 June.
The leaders met at Japan’s Prime Minister’s Office while Sonexay was visiting Japan to attend the 31st International Conference on the Future of Asia, held on 10-11 June under the theme “Working together for a more resilient and prosperous Asia.”
During the summit, Takaichi welcomed growing exchanges between Japan and Laos and reaffirmed Tokyo’s commitment to advancing cooperation under the Japan-Laos Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. She said Japan would continue supporting Laos through initiatives aimed at strengthening the country’s autonomy, resilience and sustainable development, including cooperation in human resource development and security.
Sonexay praised the strong relationship between the two countries and welcomed continued high-level exchanges. He expressed Laos’ intention to further expand bilateral ties and thanked Japan for its longstanding support for the country’s socioeconomic development.
The Lao prime minister also voiced support for Japan’s Partnership on Wide Energy and Resources Resilience Asia (POWERR Asia), an initiative aimed at enhancing regional energy security and strengthening supply chains.
The two leaders agreed to advance cooperation under existing bilateral and regional frameworks, with a focus on energy and resource security, supply chain resilience and broader efforts to promote stability and prosperity across Asia.
