Ministry of Education and Sports and the English Language Institute/China (ELIC) to Laos will continue to promote English skills development for teachers in targeted secondary schools in XiengKhuang province.
English skills development courses will be offered to 132 teachers from five districts of Nonghet, Khoun, Mok, Phoukoud and Phaxay, through the In-service English Language Teacher Training project.
The programme aims to upgrade the skills of local teachers in order to improve general English programmes in secondary schools in rural communities.
English training courses will be held at Khangkhay Teacher Training Collage in XiengKhuang province; the organising committee will provide classrooms and dormitories for all of trainees.
Ministry of Education and Sports and ELIC signed an agreement yesterday in Vientiane to launch the three-year project in XiengKhuang province, with a budget of more than US$465,000.
Director General of Secondary Education Department, Dr Sisouk Vongvichith and project manager, Dr Linda Doeden, inked a Memorandum of Understanding signing.
Last year, the ministry and ELIC completed a pilot project in Meun, Hinheup, Maed and Vangvieng of Vientiane province; with 120 local secondary English language teachers receiving training.
Dr Sisouk Vongvichith said the pilot project tested one complete year of the proposed three-year training programme for Lao secondary English language teachers, in targeted districts. With overall improvements seen throughout the participants the ministry and ELIC hopes to see the programme grow in XiengKhuang province.
The two partners believe the three year project will be very successful and help to provide human resource development, to meet the demands of economic growth.
