Singapore Awards ASEAN Scholarships to Two Lao Students

The Singapore Government as awarded ASEAN Scholarships to Mr. Syvanonh Boualaphanh and Ms Soulinthong Sanyadeng to pursue upper secondary and pre-university studies in Singapore.  They will leave for Singapore on 31 October 2016.

The ASEAN Scholarship is a highly competitive award given to outstanding students in the ASEAN region.  It aims to provide opportunities for the young people of ASEAN to develop their potential and equip them with the skills to prepare them for further studies and to meet the challenges of the new millennium.  These young students will study in good secondary schools and junior colleges in Singapore.  The scholarship covers full tuition fees, return airfares and an annual living allowance.  This is part of the Singapore Government’s cooperation with the Lao PDR in the area of human resource development.  Including Mr. Syvanonh Boualaphanh and Ms Soulinthong Sanyadeng, 24 Lao students have received this award since 2001.

Singapore Ambassador to the Lao PDR H.E. Dominic Goh hosted a tea reception to congratulate Mr. Syvanonh Boualaphanh, Ms Soulinthong Sanyadeng, and their families at the Singapore Embassy on 12 October 2016.  Ambassador Goh expressed his hope that the ASEAN Scholarship would be the first step towards a meaningful career with many opportunities to contribute to the development of the Lao PDR.  The reception was attended by representatives of Neerada Kindergarten, Primary and Secondary School and Houngheuang School where the scholarship recipients are currently studying, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Education and Sports, as well as local media.
