Thai Company to Build ASEAN’s Largest Wind Farm in Laos

Thai electric power distribution company BCPG Public will begin the construction of ASEAN’s largest wind farm in Laos at an estimated cost of development of USD 1.5 billion.

Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment, Mr. Sathabandith Insysiengmay, and BCPG President, Mr. Niwat Adirek, as well as other officials, signed the concession agreement of the Monsoon Power project on Thursday last week.

The government of Laos granted the power company a concession period of 25 years to generate electricity worth 600 MW in Dak Cheung District, Sekong province, and Sanxay District, Attapeu province, all of which would be sold to Vietnam.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed 11 years ago and the company has already invested USD 930 million on this project and wants to start construction at the end of 2022 and complete it by 2025. It would cover 1,000 hectares of land in 25 villages in Dak Cheung and Sanxay districts.

The company first announced its interest in developing a wind farm in Laos in 2021 and the generation of environment-friendly energy source will generate employment for the local population as well and provide a boost to the economy.
