According to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, Laos will see a roller coaster of weather fluctuations this week, with temperatures dropping for three days before increasing again with some rain during the weekend.
According to the report, from Wednesday to Friday, high pressure of cold air from China would once again blanket the entire country. Stronger north and northeast winds will also strike north and central areas.
Meanwhile, the southeast wind is expected to impact the southern part of Laos, lowering the temperature by 1-3 degrees and also bringing strong winds, heavy rain, thunderstorms, and hail.
However, the cold will not last long as the high air pressure from China will drop by the weekend, causing temperatures to rise in the southern and central portions of Laos while remaining quite chilly in the north, Xaysomboun district, and Bolaven Plateau.
The northeast provinces, consisting of Phongxaly, Houaphanh, and Xiengkhouang will see some downpours, accompanied by strong winds in some areas with the temperature dropping as low as 7-11 degrees but being around 25-27 degrees during the day.
Chilly weather, rainfall, and strong winds are also likely to affect the northwest of Laos, including Oudomxay, Bokeo, Luang Prabang, and Xayaboury provinces. The temperature will drop to 7-13 degrees but could go up as high as 27-30 degrees.
The temperature in the south will be fairly higher than in the north with the minimum temperature ranging between 18-21 degrees which could go up to 28-30 degrees during day time. People living in Pakse, Paksong, Salavanh, Sekong, and Attapeu can expect strong winds and hail in some areas.
Bolaven Plateau, on the other hand, will retain colder weather. The temperature can fall as low as 9-15 degrees and the maximum temperature would be around 23-25 degrees.
Central Laos, including Vientiane prefecture, Xaysomboun, Bolikhamxay, Khammouane, and Savannakhet will also experience chilly weather, as well as light rain, heavy wind, and hail as the average temperature will be around 7-13 degrees but may reach 27-30 degrees during the day.
The temperature in Vientiane Capital is anticipated to drop to as low as 18-22 degrees and reach a high of 29-31 degrees. The capital will also see moderate to heavy rainfall and high winds. On Saturday, residents should also be wary of possible thunderstorms.
