Five popular Facebook pages in Laos have come together to launch a road safety campaign aimed at reducing accidents and fatalities during Lao New Year.

The social media takeover campaign, titled “Drive Safely – Follow the Rules,” will run from mid-March to mid-April and will feature informative posts about road rules, as well as quizzes, infographics, and videos.

The five Pages leading the initiative include Laopost, Muan.la, Lao Youth Radio, Tholakhong, and Pakaad.

Road accidents are a significant cause of death and injury in Laos, and the campaign is aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of speeding and drink driving, as well as educating readers on traffic regulations.

“We haven’t received any funding for this initiative, but we have come together to try to make a difference. Road safety is such a huge problem in Laos and not enough is being done,” says Monlady Souliyavongsa, Managing Editor of Laopost.

The campaign is designed to spread the message before the Lao New Year holiday, when vehicle accidents and fatalities are at their highest in Laos. The organizers hope that their efforts will help reduce accidents and save lives.

“Traffic violations remain a big problem in Laos, especially in Vientiane. During rush hour many drivers fail to follow the rules and this puts everyone at risk. Our campaign will ensure that drivers are aware of the rules and that may help make the roads a safer place for everyone,” said Chanthasone Insixiangmai, Editor-in-Chief of muan.la.

The five Facebook pages encourage everyone to follow and share some of the campaign posts over the next few weeks to ensure that the road safety message reaches as many people as possible.
