Goods Prices Stay High in Laos Despite Slight Dip in Inflation to 11.1% in April

This Week

Laos’ inflation rate edged down slightly to 11.1 percent in April, a modest decline from 11.2 percent in March and 12.7 percent in February, according to data from the Lao Statistics Bureau.

While this marks a slight improvement, the cost of living remains significantly elevated compared to a year ago.

The Consumer Price Index, which tracks changes in prices for everyday items like food, clothing, and medicine, also increased, from 243.3 in March to 247.1 in April. This reflects a Month-on-Month inflation rate of 1.6 percent, indicating a notable rise in prices over just one month.

This monthly increase has placed additional pressure on household budgets, particularly for essential items. Food and non-alcoholic beverage prices climbed by 2.3 percent, while healthcare and medical supplies rose by 1.6 percent.

The Lao Statistics Bureau attributed the uptick in prices to heightened consumer demand during the Lao New Year festival, when increased purchasing activity typically drives prices upward.

Additionally, a rise in fuel prices at the beginning of April further contributed to the overall increase in living costs.
