Thailand Ranks Among Top 10 Countries with Highest LGBTQ+ Population, Laos Data Unavailable

This Week

Thailand has been ranked among the top 10 countries with the largest percentage of individuals identifying as part of the LGBTQ+ community, according to the latest data from the World Population Review (WPR).

The report estimates that 10 percent of Thailand’s population identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual/omnisexual, or asexual.

The global survey covers 62 countries and focuses solely on individuals who self-identified within the LGBTQ+ spectrum. Thailand shares the 10 percent figure with several other countries, including Spain, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Sweden, and the United States.

Although the report includes a wide range of countries, it does not provide specific data for Laos.

At the top of the list is the Netherlands, where 14 percent of the population identifies as LGBTQ+, followed by Brazil at 13 percent. Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Chile each report 11 percent.

Globally, the WPR estimates that around eight percent of the world’s population identifies as homosexual, bisexual, or pansexual, based on the most recent data available from 2021. The majority—80 percent—identify as heterosexual, while 12 percent chose not to disclose their sexual orientation.

The findings also highlight generational trends, showing that younger people are more likely to openly identify as LGBTQ+. Generation Z, those aged roughly 10 to 26 in 2025, shows the highest rate of identification, followed by Millennials, aged around 27 to 42. Baby Boomers are the least likely to report an LGBTQ+ identity.
