Over 100 Bodies Recovered in Hat Yai Flood; Identification Efforts Underway

This Week

On 27 November, the National Police Headquarters said more than 100 bodies have been recovered after the catastrophic floods in Hat Yai, Songkhla Province. More than 20 of the remains still need identity verification.

Forensic Evidence Center 9 is leading the examinations, supported by additional forensic teams and units dispatched by the Police Commissioner General. Refrigerated storage has been prepared to preserve the bodies while the work continues.

Songkhla Nakarin Hospital, which has received a large share of the recovered remains, later issued an emergency public statement. The hospital extended condolences to families and stressed that strict legal and forensic procedures must be completed before any remains can be released.

Due to the high number of cases, the hospital said it cannot yet return bodies to relatives until identification is finalized under protocols set by the National Police Department. Officials said staff are working urgently to complete the identification registry.

The hospital will provide further instructions when the process is ready and urged the public to follow its official channels for verified updates.

The government first declared a state of emergency in southern Songkhla Province on 25 November amid forecasts of continued heavy rain and possible flash floods.

Days of torrential rain have inundated Hat Yai and surrounding areas, submerging homes, roads, and commercial districts. Residents are wading through chest-deep water, with some resorting to plastic containers as makeshift boats to ferry children to safety.
