The Vientiane Department of Public Works and Transport has issued a traffic advisory urging residents, commuters, and visitors to avoid several key roads across the capital from 28 November to 2 December, as the city prepares for large-scale events marking the 50th anniversary of Lao National Day.
The notice, issued under the directives of the Vientiane Mayor and the Vientiane Capital Administrative Organization, outlines extensive road closures and diversions to accommodate parade preparations, official ceremonies, and increased security measures.
Major Roads to Avoid
Authorities have asked the public to stay clear of several major arteries, including:
Kaysone Phomvihane Road from the Dongdok traffic light to Patuxai.
Lane Xang Avenue from Hor Kham to Patuxai.
Souphanouvong Road and Setthathirath Road from Wattay International Airport to Hor Kham.
Setthathirath Road and Thadeua Road from Hor Kham to a traffic intersection near Lao-German Technical College.
Samsenthai Road from Wat Simeuang to KM2.
23 August Road from Patuxai to the 450th Anniversary roundabout.
Nong Bon Road and That Luang Road from Naxay intersection to That Luang intersection.
The That Luang perimeter road and all connecting roads from the Kamphengmeuang Road to the stupa grounds.
The department said these areas will host parade vehicles, security personnel, and event logistics teams, which will significantly slow traffic.
Detours for Drivers
Specific detours have been arranged:
Vehicles traveling from Route 13 North to Route 13 South should divert via Ban Xay Moungkhun Expressway, Nong Buek Road, and Dongdok toward Don Noun or Route 450.
Trucks from the Friendship Bridge heading to Route 13 South should use Route 450-Year and turn at Dongdok as directed.
Trucks from Route 13 South going to the Friendship Bridge should turn left at the Route 450th Anniversary intersection.
Vehicles from Kaysone Phomvihane Road, Road 10, or Don Noun Road are advised to avoid the city center by diverting through Ban Nong Niang or Mittaphab Hospital Road.
Drivers coming from Thadeua Road or the Friendship Bridge who do not intend to enter central Vientiane should reroute via Phat Phonthan intersection and the Bueng That Luang Special Economic Zone Road.
Traffic police will be stationed at major intersections to guide motorists and ease congestion.
Full Closure on 2 December
On 2 December, from 4:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Lane Xang Avenue from Hor Kham to the Phonsaart traffic intersection on Kaysone Phomvihane Road will be fully closed to allow the National Day procession and parade to move through the city.
Residents traveling between Sikhottabong, Chanthabouly, Dongdok, Don Noun, and Sisattanak districts are encouraged to use alternative routes such as Phontong-Dongdok Road, That Luang Road, Kamphengmeuang Road, and the 450-Year Road.
Parking for parade spectators will be available around designated parks, with officers on hand to direct vehicles.
Authorities Urge Public Cooperation
The department emphasized the importance of public compliance during the festival period, noting that the large-scale parade and ceremonial events will attract thousands of spectators and international guests.
“Drivers of all types of vehicles are requested to strictly follow the instructions of traffic officers,” the notice said.
The measures are part of Vientiane’s broader preparations for the landmark celebration, which will include cultural performances, a military parade, and an evening flyover to commemorate five decades since the independence of Laos.
