Laos, China Team Up to Modernize Livestock Industry

This Week

Laos partnered with China to launch a new disease-control project, helping transform the livestock sector into a cleaner, safer, and more efficient industry that benefits farmers, and consumers in Laos.

The initiative, led by the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Environment in partnership with major Chinese companies, aims to upgrade disease prevention, strengthen veterinary services, and support the country’s move toward modern and sustainable livestock production.

A key objective of the new project is to establish a reliable vaccination and disease-prevention system to protect cattle, buffalo, and other livestock from common and emerging diseases.

This includes setting up animal health and vaccination centers in both northern and southern provinces.

In addition, the project supports the construction of modern slaughterhouses and meat-processing facilities that meet national and international hygiene standards. These upgrades are expected to improve food safety, reduce environmental risks, and enhance Laos’ competitiveness in regional livestock markets.

According to officials, the project is closely aligned with the Department of Livestock and Fisheries’ Development Plan for 2026–2030, which sets out national goals to improve the quality, safety, and productivity of meat, eggs, and fish.

The government’s long-term vision focuses on building a strong and resilient agricultural base that can fully meet domestic food needs while creating new opportunities for export.
