The Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised citizens to exercise caution and temporarily avoid applying for visas to the United States, as Washington’s suspension of visa issuance for Laos takes effect today, 21 January.
According to the ministry, the measure follows an announcement by the United States Department of State, which has suspended the issuance of all types of US visas for citizens of 75 countries, including Laos.
The ministry warned that visa applications submitted during this period will not be processed, while applicants may still incur application fees without receiving a visa. Lao citizens were therefore urged to refrain from submitting applications until further notice.
The restriction does not apply to Lao nationals holding diplomatic or official passports. Those traveling to the United States on official duties or to attend international conferences by invitation may continue to do so under existing arrangements.
Suspension Part of Broader US Immigration Restrictions
The suspension forms part of broader immigration measures under the Trump administration, which argue that immigrants must be financially self-sufficient and not place a “burden” on US welfare systems. The measure affects visa processing for permanent residency applicants from countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East.
While applications and interviews may still be submitted, US authorities will not issue visas during the suspension. Existing visas remain valid, and dual nationals applying with passports from non-listed countries are exempt.
The duration of the suspension has not been specified, raising concerns that it could extend for an indefinite period. The policy follows other recent US immigration restrictions, including expanded travel bans and lower refugee admission caps.
The Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue monitoring developments and will issue further guidance if the situation changes.
