A story about family sacrifice has taken centre stage at this year’s Lan Xang Short Film Competition.
“Holding the Light” won this year’s Lan Xang Short Film Competition, standing out among 27 entries for its intimate and emotionally grounded storytelling.
Directed by young Lao filmmaker Thanva Kounlavong, the short film explores sibling relationships and the quiet sacrifices that often shape family life. The story focuses on subtle tensions and unspoken emotions between brothers and sisters.
While the film can be described as a drama, Thanva said his intention was not to create a tragic story.
“I wanted the mood at the end to feel warm, at the same time, I wanted to raise a question: can we truly give up our dreams for someone else?” he said.
That central question guided the film’s development from the beginning.
Inspired by Real-Life Family Dynamics
Although the story portrays siblings, Thanva drew inspiration from observing others rather than personal experience.
“Although I’m an only child, I’ve always watched how siblings interact. Some are close. Some don’t get along, even into adulthood,” he said.
He also reflected on his parents’ generation, when disagreements between brothers and sisters could last for years.
Discussions with his actors about their own family experiences further shaped the script.
Those conversations deepened the emotional realism of the project and helped anchor the story in everyday Lao life, Thanva explained.
From Concept to Completion
The film took nearly two years to develop.
“The images were in my head for a long time, when we finally shot it and I saw it during editing, I felt happy. What I imagined finally had life,” the director said.
When asked why the film won first prize, Thanva said he could not say for certain.
“After post-production, I just felt relieved that it was finished. For me, I had already won against myself. I don’t know what the judges saw, but maybe the film is now starting its own journey,” he said.
Supporting Emerging Lao Filmmakers
Lan Xang Shorts is a Vientiane-based community organization and annual short film competition dedicated to supporting and showcasing emerging Lao filmmakers. The initiative aims to strengthen the country’s creative industry while providing a platform for new directors to develop and present original work.
The competition held its awards ceremony on 21 February this year. Organizers said the program encourages stories rooted in Lao culture and social realities, while also creating pathways for regional and international exposure.
This year’s event brought together filmmakers, producers, development partners, and cultural stakeholders, highlighting growing momentum within Laos’ independent film scene.
With works like “Holding the Light,” a new generation of Lao filmmakers continues to step forward, telling intimate stories that resonate far beyond national borders.
