EDL Powers Up Preparations for Asean Summits

This Week

Electricite du Laos (EDL) will utilise three hydropower dams to boost power supplies to the 28th and 29th ASEAN Summits in Vientiane next week.

Officials from EDL explained their preparations for the major events at a meeting with Deputy Minister of Energy and Mines, Mr. Viraphonh Viravong on Monday.

Nam Ngum, Nam Leuk and the Nam Mang 3 hydroelectric power plants have been thoroughly checked to ensure smooth electricity supply 24 hours a day.

Nam Ngum can produce its full of capacity of 155 MW while Nam Leuk will be at 60MW and Nam Mang 3 can produce 40 MW.

EDL has also checked the HinHeup-Naxaithong, Phonsoung-Naxaithong, Nam Ngum-Naxaithong, Nam Mang3-Naphong-Khoksa-Ard and Thanalaeng-NongKhai substations to guarantee distribution throughout the power grid during the summits.

Furthermore, officials assured the deputy minister the power company had contingencies in place to resolve any possible outages very quickly.

EDL has assigned the two main Phontong and Viengkeo power stations to supply the International Convention Centre where summit delegates will meet.

The 115/22kV Donkoy station in Sisattanak district will be used to supply electricity for the villas where the heads of state and government will stay while attending the summits.

EDL Officials pointed out there were 14 power plants supplying Vientiane so they could guarantee enough electricity for the capital.

A s of 2015, Laos had built 38 power plants at a total cost of more than 81.7 trillion kip (US$10 billion), with a total installed capacity of 6,265 MW, according to the Ministry of Energy and Mines’ Energy Policy and Planning Department.

These can generate 33,315 million kWh of electricity a year, and some 20.4 percent of the power generated is consumed in Laos while 79.6 percent is exported.
