Dumex Ltd. of Thailand and other sponsor companies in Laos have presented about 1,000 boxes of Dumex’s infant formula valued at 134 million kip and other assistance to flood victims in Laos.
The recent handover ceremony was attended by the President of the Lao Women’s Union, Dr Inlavanh Keobounphanh, and representatives of the sponsor companies. Among those present were the Senior Business Development Manager at Dumex Ltd., Mr. Seksun Jaikhong, Chief Operations Officer of Khouan Chai Trading ImportExport Co., Ltd., Ms Manivone Sittixay, and the President of Climax Multimedia Co., Ltd, Mr Vongpakai Saenbouttalath.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Inlavanh said the Dumex products would help mothers and children in flood-affected areas.
She said many families still need help with health services, hygiene and sanitation, and the provision of general consumer items. The assistance provided will help families to recover from flood damage around the country, with figures relating to losses still unavailable at present, Dr Inlavanh said. The floods inundated homes, restaurants and other buildings as well as bridges, water and electricity networks, and dispensaries. Mothers and their children were lacking essential food items on a daily basis, she added.
Mr. Seksun Jaikhong said Dumex was worried about the situation of rural people who were victims of the recent flooding, in particular the nutrition status of small children.
We think that children around the country will benefit from this assistance, which is aimed at improving their nutrition, he said.
According to the Department of Disaster Management and Climate Change under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, provincial authorities are working to repair bridges and roads and facilitate the work of volunteers in distributing money, food and clothing.
Although flood-hit communities have received some assistance from provincial authorities, donors and NGOs, many families still need more help.
