Leaders Pay Respects to the Late King Bhumibol Adulyadej

This Week

President Bounnhang Vorachit yesterday led a group of high-ranking officials in a visit to the Thai Embassy to pay respects to Thailand’s late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

His Majesty King BhumibolAdulyadej passed away on October 13, aged 89.

On behalf of the people of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, President Bounnhang offered his deepest condolences and wished to share in this time of sadness with Her Majesty the Queen, the Crown Prince and members of the royal family and the Thai people on the passing away of His Majesty Bhumibol Adulyadej.

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej was a king who made great sacrifices and displayed many virtues in his devotion to the nation and the Thai people during his 70-year reign. His Majesty was deeply revered by the Thai people.

His Majesty played an active role in improving and strengthening the friendly relations and cooperation between the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and the Kingdom of Thailand over the years. The departure of His Majesty is a great loss for the Thai people.

According to a report in The Nation yesterday, the King’s innovations were put to practical use in a range of rural development projects, generating concrete benefits for communities throughout Thailand and neighbouring countries.

It is important to note the feelings of deep respect and gratitude towards His Majesty that exist in ordinary households over the Thai border. There are currently nearly 10 major Royal Projects in Laos alone. The first, initiated in 1992, was the Development Service Project at HuaySone-HuaySua in Nayang village, Naxaithong district, about 22 kilometres north of central Vientiane. His Majesty the King presided over the official launch of the project in April 1994 on a visit that also saw him open the first Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge across the Mekong River between Nong Khai province and Vientiane.
