Thai PM Announces Monetary Rewards for Police in Major Drug Seizes

This Week

The announcement was made last week when PM Prayut Chan-o-cha unveiled the government’s urgent phase action plan for curbing the spread of narcotics in Thailand.

PM Prayut informed that revised narcotics laws in Thailand have already led to the confiscation of THB 11.1 billion worth of drugs.

The event saw attendance from authorities of various Thai and foreign agencies, including the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the Foreign Anti-Narcotics and Crime Community of Thailand (FANC).

At the gathering, the Thai PM presided over the presentation of monetary rewards for police officers who made arrests in major drug cases in 2022. The officials were awarded around THB 8 million (USD 225,415) for their work on four cases, and the prize amount was equivalent to a 30% cut from the value of assets seized in said cases.

The PM added that cracking down on drug trafficking is crucial for the national security of the country and hence it required prevention, suppression, and rehabilitation efforts from relevant officials in Thailand as well as collaboration with neighboring countries. He also urged educational institutions to remain drug-free zones and families to support in drug use prevention and rehabilitation efforts for their loved ones.

Thai officials recently seized millions of Amphetamine Tablets from an oil tanker that had departed from Laos via the Laos-Thai Friendship Bridge and arrested the driver in connection to the incident.
