Lao Woman Attacked by Three Transgender Individuals Over Alleged Ethnic Dispute

This Week

A 34-year-old Lao woman, identified as Da, reported being assaulted by three transgender individuals in Pattaya, Thailand in the early hours of 14 January, according to Thai media.

The attack occurred outside an Indian restaurant near Pattaya Beach Soi 9, approximately 200 meters from the Pattaya City Police Station.

Security footage shows that Da was attempting to flee before being followed by one of the attackers, who grabbed her hair, causing her to fall. Two others quickly joined in on the assault until a group of tourists intervened to stop the attack.

In a video published by Thai media, the victim stated that the assault stemmed from an ongoing dispute involving her ethnicity and an alleged workplace incident. She claimed that one of the attackers blamed her for their dismissal due to poor performance.

Leading up to the attack, Da received insulting messages, including being referred to in a discriminatory manner as “Lao.” In Thailand, calling someone “a Lao” suggests that the person is seen as inferior. This term is not only used to describe Lao nationals but also applies to Thai individuals who speak with a Lao accent, have little to no education, or to have a lower social status.

The conflict intensified when one of the attackers located her at a beer bar and later confronted her at the restaurant. Although she tried to flee, Da was ultimately overpowered. Following the attack, she lodged a formal complaint with Pattaya City Police, urging authorities to take action.

Thai authorities are now investigating the case. While reports suggest the attackers have a history of aggressive behavior toward tourists, particularly in the beach area.
