Laos Ranks Seventh Among ASEAN Countries Sending Workers to South Korea

This Week

Laos has been ranked seventh among ASEAN countries in terms of sending workers to South Korea, with 2,969 Lao nationals currently employed there, according to state media. Vietnam tops the list of ASEAN countries, sending 55,795 workers to South Korea.

Korea hires workers under a Service Commitment Agreement, using a points-based system agreed upon by various sectors, including industries and SMEs, according to an official from Laos’ Employment Service Centre at the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare.

The official added that job applicants can apply through Private Employment Service Companies, which accept individuals who are in good health, aged 25-45, and genuinely interested in working.

Deputy Director of the Vientiane province’s Labour Department, Pengpiu Thitlimkhuan, echoed this, encouraging those interested in agricultural work to register. He noted that no specific skills or language tests are required, though good health is necessary.

In Meun district, 307 people have already registered for seasonal farm work, with contracts ranging from five months to a year. Monthly wages for these positions range from USD 1,600 to USD 2,000, which includes social benefits.

Since April 2022, Laos has sent 434 seasonal workers to South Korea, with most working in areas like Changnyeong-Gun, Miryang-Si, Sancheong-Gun, and Uiryeong-Gun. Currently, 2,969 Lao nationals are employed in South Korea.
