Traffic Police Out in Force Ahead of Asean Summits

This Week

Traffic police will out in force ensuring roads run smoothly ahead of the arrival of high ranking regional delegations attending ASEAN Summits next month in Vientiane, according to a lead ing official.

Vientiane Traffic Police Department Director and Deputy Chief of the Vientiane Police Office Colonel Youttaphong Souvannasing told media this week that with Laos hosting the back-to-back 28th and 29th ASEAN Summits all his officials are working hard to make sure there are no major traffic issues in the capital.

“We started work for the ASEAN Foreign Minister’s Meeting last month with hundreds of traffic officials from the department and district traffic offices in central Vientiane clearing crowded streets and illegal parking along the roads,” he explained.

After that event, officials gathered information and lessons learnt to best prepare themselves for the main ASEAN Summits in September.

Colonel Youttaphong said officials this week were patrolling major roads in Vientiane to make sure motorists were not breaking the traffic regulations and particularly reminding the public not to park illegally where there were red and white markings.

“Offending motorists will be advised to park in appropriate parking areas. Officials will also be located at traffic lights and high volume areas during the rush hours to clear any vehicle congestion,” he explained.

About 400 traffic officials would be on duty during the ASEAN Summits and associated meetings next month, he added.

Some local motorists reported a smoother run during the morning and evening rush hours due to police cracking down on vehicles parking illegally along roads. Officials have reminded road users to follow any parking signs which advised what time parking was permitted.

Colonel Youttaphong said traffic officials were reporting weekly in an effort to address any emerging traffic issues.

“We are confident we can address any problems that might arise and we would like to call on all motorists to follow the traffic regulations and directions from our officials,” he added.
