Hong Kong’s first survey on children’s sense of touch: Close to 70% of parents concerned about children’s stunted growth from deprivation of physical touch
Reckitt Benckiser and its brand Dettol promote Global Handwashing Day and support over 10,000 families in need to ‘Seize the Childhood and Keep On to Protect Our Future’
HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach – 14 October 2022 – The sense of touch is the primary way young children bond with their parents and peers. It is also through physical touch that they learn and explore the world around them. From the first of its kind ‘Hong Kong Children’s Touch Survey’[1] conducted by Reckitt and its brand Dettol, it revealed that the deprivation of touch during the pandemic has led to varying degrees of impact on the early development of young children in Hong Kong. In response to the Global Handwashing Day on 15 October[2], Dettol actively promotes the importance of maintaining personal hygiene amongst parents and their children. Working with its network of Hong Kong charity partners[3], Reckitt is donating Dettol products to over 10,000 families in need to ‘Seize the Childhood and Keep On to Protect Our Future’.

Life without touch hampers early development of Hong Kong children sparking concern of close to 70% parents
Hygiene concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic have led to drastically reduced children’s exposure to the outside world. This was corroborated by the survey findings of 300 Hong Kong parents of children aged between 2 and 5 years. The surveyed parents typically cautioned their children against touching objects and other people, including things in public areas (e.g., banisters, lift buttons, door handles, and railings etc.) (78%); strangers (74%), things on the street (e.g., goods at supermarkets or shops) (69%), playground facilities (e.g., slides, swings, climbing frames, ball pits, merry-go-rounds etc.) (51%), as well as flora and fauna in nature or outdoor areas (e.g., grassland, beaches, stray animals etc.) (49%). Additionally, 70% of surveyed parents said that they avoided touching or hugging their young children before disinfection upon arriving home.
Multisensory learning method incorporating the haptic exploration of different objects could positively enhance the learning effectiveness of young children[4]. In the survey, 70% of parents said their children loved touching objects around them. However, more than 60% of parents said they would intervene when their children were about to touch something or some people that seemed unhygienic, such as calling out to stop them[5] and immediately disinfecting their hands. The parents’ instant reactions may unwittingly suppress their children’s desire to explore their surroundings and may even cause them to associate negatively with connecting with the outside world.
The lack of interpersonal touch could severely impact the social and cognitive development of young children[6]. Close to 70% of surveyed parents were concerned that touch deprivation would lead to stunted growth in their young children. During the pandemic, they observed the varying degrees of impact on their children’s personality, psychological development, language development, interpersonal skills, and learning ability. Some parents said that their children became more inhibited, unsociable, bashful, and easier to be frightened, with some reporting that their children became easily startled whenever someone approached them, and they seemed to struggle to relax regardless of circumstances.
63% of parents insisted on completing a minimum of two disinfection steps before touching their children; 80% of parents hoped their children could maintain personal hygiene habits after pandemic
The survey has found that 63% of parents insisted on touching their children only after completing at least two steps or more of the disinfection process, which involved washing their hands with handwash (69%), taking a shower (58%), and changing their clothes (56%). Children have acquired a certain level of hygiene awareness from their parents during the pandemic. For example, 75% of young children have learnt to clean their hands proactively, and 55% would wash their hands for an average of six times or more daily. Up to 80% of parents hoped their children could continue the personal hygiene habits after the pandemic to prevent the threat of other viruses. Hygiene issues were often the cause of conflicts between the surveyed parents and other family members, with such conflicts more frequent with their elderly parents and in-laws (47%) and spouse (38%). The findings show that better communication is needed to help the family as a whole to reach a consensus on hygiene standards.
Reckitt and Dettol to ‘Seize the Childhood’ and support over 10,000 families in need
“As a father of three, I can empathise with the surveyed parents for the concerns and anxiety they have had during the pandemic. While physical distancing could help contain the spread of the virus, it also reduced the opportunities for young children to explore their surroundings. Finding the right balance here is crucial to the healthy development of children,” said Boudewijn Feith, Reckitt General Manager Hong Kong/Taiwan. “At Reckitt, we put people first and we are committed to providing our consumers with high-quality hygiene protection in pursuit of a cleaner and healthier world with one of the most trusted antiseptic brands, Dettol. In response to the Global Handwashing Day on 15 October, Reckitt and our brand Dettol launch the ‘Seize the Childhood and Keep On to Protect Our Future’ campaign at PARKnSHOP stores. We believe that consistent personal hygiene habits will give parents the peace of mind to let their children explore the world, unlock their potential, and enjoy a happy and healthy childhood.”
During the promotion period from tomorrow (14 October) to 15 December, with any purchase of Dettol personal care products of a designated amount at PARKnSHOP stores in Hong Kong and Macau, consumers will entitle to a cash coupon that can be used in the next purchase. Meanwhile, Dettol will donate hygiene and disinfectant products to Reckitt’s network of Hong Kong charity partners3, expected to benefit over 10,000 families in need. The amount of rebate and donation will be doubled on 15 October to celebrate the Global Handwashing Day.

Immediate action needed to protect children from the global hunger crisis, warns World Vision ahead of World Food Day

As an aid organisation that works with communities and partners around the world, World Vision sees the devastating toll that the compounding effects of conflict, climate change, Covid-19, and the ripple effects of the conflict in Ukraine are having. The hunger crisis is already having profound consequences for children, including threatening children’s survival and increasing the risk of severe and acute malnutrition.
Currently, one in every five children under the age of five, or as many as 149 million, suffer from stunting, which indicates the severity of child malnutrition. Malnutrition has a major impact on children’s physical and psychological development, and is one of the main underlying causes of preventable deaths among children under five.
World Vision’s latest research found that there had been an overall increase of 14% in food prices in the past year. Rises have been especially sharp in some of the poorest countries, especially those reliant on imports or affected by climate change. For example, food prices have increased by 143% in Sudan, 42% in Ethiopia, and 33% in Angola since 2021, while there has been a 5% increase in the UK in the past year. In Somalia, it would take a worker two weeks to earn enough money to buy a basic food basket of 10 common food items, including cooking oil, eggs, milk, etc. – however, someone in France or Australia would only have to work two hours to afford those same products.
“Food prices have increased globally over the past few years as the world grapples with the triple crisis of COVID-19, conflict, and climate change,” said Mary Njeri, World Vision’s Global Hunger Response Director. “Most people around the globe are experiencing the impact of increasing food prices, but for some, they have potentially deadly consequences – almost 50 million children are now so thin for their height that they’re at heightened risk of death. Unless we take urgent action, more families will struggle to feed themselves, too.”
The situation may look bleak, but we can work together to turn the tide. With decades of experience in relief responses, and long-term partnerships with the World Food Programme (WFP) and other local organisations, World Vision is bringing food to the hands of those in need.
By pooling the donations raised worldwide, last year World Vision was able to partner with WFP to reach 11.5 million people with food and cash assistance. This year, World Vision will continue to provide assistance to affected children and families, including distributing emergency food to affected families, providing livelihood assistance to help families recover, treatment and therapeutic food for malnourished children, primary healthcare support for vulnerable communities, and clean water for communities to maintain good hygiene and prevent diseases, etc.
World Vision calls on members of the public in Hong Kong to act now and save starving children and families. For details, please visit: https://www.worldvision.org.hk/en/our-work/emergency-relief/global-hunger-relief

Indonesia’s largest private steelmaker Gunung Raja Paksi to lead Southeast Asia’s steel industry to a greener future through ESG Strategy
- Launched their new ESG Strategy Handbook today, where Gunung Raja Paksi aims to reduce its environmental and social impact in steel – traditionally, a major contributor to global carbon emissions – through goals that engages with suppliers, globally-recognized standards, and greenhouse gas reduction
- To reach its ESG goals, GRP launches dedicated Sustainability Department to lead its sustainability efforts to be led by Sheren Omega,
JAKARTA, INDONESIA – Media OutReach – 14 October 2022 – PT Gunung Raja Paksi Tbk (GRP), a member of Gunung Steel Group and one of the largest private steelmakers in Indonesia, has been on a mission to decarbonise steel production and reduce greenhouse gas emissions within the Southeast Asia region. Transforming traditional approaches within an industry that accounts for 8% of global emissions, GRP today announced the launch of their new Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Strategy Handbook, with the set-up of a new Sustainability Department aimed at addressing rising concerns about climate change and social issues, such as equality and human rights. The ESG Strategy Handbook was developed from GRP’s partnership with multinational consultancy firm, Environmental Resources Management.
These announcements are in line with industrial and regional shifts towards sustainability, including the Government of Indonesia’s (GOI) goal to reach net zero by 2060 or sooner.
Steel continues to be a major component in Indonesia’s exports, where exports of steel and iron have increased by 92.88% , adding an additional US$20.95 billion in export value for the country. GRP’s business has been on the path towards sustainable steel production. The formation of the new sustainability department, headed by GRP’s Head of Sustainability, Sheren Omega, has been tasked with developing the company’s strategy as they venture into sustainable steel production. She has also played an active role in transforming GRP’s business processes and technologies. Through her contributions, GRP managed to achieve record profits in 2021. Prior to GRP, Sheren was a Manager for PwC Indonesia where she has executed key risk management and business process review projects in various industries ranging from manufacturing, telecommunication to non-profit organisations.
“At GRP, we have worked with industry experts to assess the steel landscape in the region, and we are confident that with our ESG Strategy Handbook, we are geared towards achieving a more sustainable production for steel manufacturing,” said Sheren Omega.
To guide the Sustainability Department, GRP also released its ESG Strategy Handbook that outlines the ambitions and key steps that the company will take towards sustainable steel production. This builds on GRP’s existing efforts, such as having their products certified by globally recognised standards, and their recent purchase of carbon credits – making them one of the first steelmakers in the region to do so.
Aligning with international standards such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and ResponsibleSteelTM Principles, GRP has built its ESG goals around these five pillars:
- Responsible Procurement: Have majority of their key suppliers have their own policy on responsible conduct or operations
- Environmental and Social Compliance: Attain a high level of environment and social compliance across GRP operations
- Energy Transition and Low Carbon Solutions: Achieve a well-below 2°C-aligned science-based target (SBT) for greenhouse gas reduction and towards certified products
- Contributing to Responsible Environmental Management: Minimise adverse impact on human and the environment across all production sites
- Nurturing Talent: Maintain a supportive workplace for talent cultivation and career development
These five pillars are focused on driving efforts and providing guidance on priority actions when it comes to producing steel. They are also aimed at mitigating the impacts that came from the development of the steel industry such as the shortage of raw materials and supply chain issues.
“As the demand for steel increases in the region, we are responsible for producing steel in a way that causes minimal damage to the environment. By working towards bolstering steel exports in the region and ensuring that producing sustainable steel becomes top of mind for all steel manufacturers, we hope that the ESG Strategy Handbook can pave the way forward for best practices within steel manufacturing,” said Tony Taniwan, Former President Commissioner and Shareholder at GRP.
With their ESG Strategy Handbook, GRP hopes to guide the industry on overcoming these issues that are traditionally faced by the steel industry. The company aspires to not only drive profitability but also to minimise environmental impact by championing environmental stewardship and responsible steel processes. Having sustainability as their core value, this commitment would allow the company to take incremental steps in aligning business processes with environmental and social responsibilities to improve the welfare of the people and local communities.
“The rapidly growing economies of Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries are still largely supported by the infrastructure and construction sectors. PT Gunung Raja Paksi Tbk (GRP) has been playing a key role in supplying the critical materials for these sectors in the region. In pursuit of net zero and sustainable business, the valuable contribution of the steel industry to demonstrate commitment and more responsible management of ESG risks across the value chain of operation is more urgent than ever. Our collaboration with GRP in shaping their ESG and sustainability aims to shape and strengthen its management of environmental and social impact to help bring about positive change.” said Setiaji Hadiprayitno, Country Managing Partner at ERM Indonesia.
