Security Experts Face Record Cyber Threats, Overwhelming Workload

Organizations seek new ways to protect their expanding attack surface, maintain stability

HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach – 18 March 2022 – a global cybersecurity leader, warns of spiraling risk to digital infrastructure and remote workers as threat actors increase their rate of attack on organizations and individuals.

“Attackers are always working to increase their victim count and profit, whether through quantity or effectiveness of attacks,” said Tony Lee, Head of Consulting, Hong Kong and Macau, at Trend Micro. “The breadth and depth of our global threat intelligence allows us to identify shifts in how malicious actors target their victims across the world. Our latest research shows that while Trend Micro threat detections rose 42% year-on-year in 2021 to over 94 billion, they shrank in some areas as attacks became more precisely targeted.”

Ransomware attackers are shifting their focus to critical businesses and industries more likely to pay, and double extortion tactics ensure that they are able to profit. Ransomware-as-a-service offerings have opened the market to attackers with limited technical knowledge – but also given rise to more specialization, such as initial access brokers who are now an essential part of the cybercrime supply chain.

Threat actors are also getting better at exploiting human error to compromise cloud infrastructure and remote workers. Trend Micro Cloud App Security (CAS) detected and prevented 25.7 million email threats in 2021 compared to 16.7 million in 2020, with the volume of blocked phishing attempts nearly doubling over the period. Research shows home workers are often prone to take more risks than those in the office, which makes phishing a particular risk.

In the cloud, incorrectly configured systems continue to plague organizations. Services such as Amazon Elastic Block Store and Microsoft Azure’s Virtual Machine were among the services that had relatively high misconfiguration rates. Trend Micro also found that Docker REST APIs are frequently misconfigured, exposing them to attacks from groups like TeamTNT that deploy crypto-mining malware on affected systems.

Business email compromise (BEC) saw detections drop 11%. However, CAS blocked a higher percentage of advanced BEC emails, which could be detected only by comparing the writing style of the attacker with that of the intended sender. These attacks comprised 47% of all BEC attempts in 2021 versus 23% in 2020.

While 2021 was a record year for new vulnerabilities, Trend Micro research shows that 22% of the exploits sold in the cybercrime underground last year were over three years old. Patching old vulnerabilities remains an essential task alongside monitoring for new threats to prevent cyber-attacks and ensure strong security posture.

Teledyne e2v Now Shipping Flight Models of its Space DDR4 Memory Solution

GRENOBLE, FRANCE – Media OutReach – 18 March 2022 – The progression of Teledyne e2v Semiconductors’ ultra-high density DDR4 memories continues, with news that flight models are now being shipped to key customers around the world. It signifies a major step forward in the ground-breaking project – after sampling successfully led to widespread design-in activity and adoption of this technology. Consequently, the company is now moving into the mass production phase, with the space-grade radiation-tolerant DDR4s being available.

With a 4GByte storage capacity, and dimensions of just 15mm x 20mm x 1.92mm, Teledyne e2v’s DDR4s exhibit a much higher storage density than competing solutions – taking up only half the PCB real estate, and almost an order of magnitude less volume. Maintaining elevated performance on an ongoing basis, they deliver data transfer speeds of 2.4GT/s.

Supplied in a multi-chip package (MCP) format, each Teledyne e2v DDR4T04G72 memory features expansive bus capabilities, where 64bits are assigned to data transfer and an additional 8bits for error correction. The DDR4T04G72 is an optimal companion for the company’s own Qormino® processors and they are also compatible with the vast majority of processors, SoCs and FPGAs from other vendors.

Thanks to their high reliability construction and high degree of radiation tolerance, these devices will be a pivotal resource for space-deployed edge computing platforms. Radiation testing and characterization conducted on these DDR4s show that their single event latch-up (SEL) threshold is greater than 60MeV.cm²/mg. Their single event upset (SEU) and single event function interrupt (SEFI) data also exceeds 60MeV.cm²/mg, and they have demonstrated resilience to 100krad total ionizing dose (TID).

Teledyne e2v’s DDR4s can be ordered in both industrial temperature range (-40°C to 105°C) and military temperature range (-55°C to 125°C), and up to NASA Level 1 (based on NASA EEE-INST-002 – Section M4 – PEMs). This will mean that a greater breadth of potential applications can be addressed.

“We are recognized as leading the way in elevated density radiation tolerant memory for space applications, and our technology has already been incredibly well received by the market. What differentiates us from the competition is the comprehensive and open data package we provide, giving clients everything they require to start their designs and complete them in the shortest possible timeframe, with all the background information and expert engineering support readily available,” states Thomas Guillemain, Marketing & Business Development Manager at Teledyne e2v. “The space industry is presented with an assured supply of compact, easy to interface memories that raise the performance benchmark. We are making great headway on the next stage of our roadmap, with other generations of even higher capacity devices currently in the pipeline.

About Teledyne e2v

Teledyne e2v’s innovations lead developments in healthcare, life sciences, space, transportation, defense and security and industrial markets. Teledyne e2v’s unique approach involves listening to the market and application challenges of customers and partnering with them to provide innovative standard, semi-custom or fully-custom solutions, bringing increased value to their systems.
