IBM and NASA Release Groundbreaking Open-Source AI Model on Hugging Face to Predict Solar Weather and Help Protect Critical Technology

The first heliophysics AI foundation model trained on high resolution solar observation data offers insights into the Sun’s dynamic surface, helping plan for solar weather that can disrupt technology on Earth and in space

Openly available on Hugging Face, the model was built to speed up scientific discovery and democratize AI for the global research and technology community

Researchers also release the largest known curated heliophysics dataset to advance data driven space weather research

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y., Aug. 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — IBM (NYSE: IBM) and NASA today unveiled the most advanced open-source foundation model designed to understand high resolution solar observation data and predict how solar activity affects Earth and space-based technology. Surya, named for the Sanskrit word for the Sun, represents a significant advancement in applying AI to solar image interpretation and space weather forecasting research, providing a novel tool to help protect everything from GPS navigation to power grids to telecommunications from the Sun’s ever-changing nature.

The Sun may be 93 million miles away, but its impact on modern life is immediate and growing. Solar flares and coronal mass ejections can knock out satellites, disrupt airline navigation, trigger power blackouts, and pose serious radiation risks to astronauts. With humanity’s increasing dependence on space-based technology and plans for deeper space exploration, accurate solar weather prediction has become critical.

As humanity’s technological dependence grows, so does our vulnerability to space weather. According to a systemic risk scenario created by Lloyd’s, the global economy could be exposed to losses of $2.4 trillion over a five-year period, with the expected loss of $17 billion from the threat of a hypothetical solar storm. Recent solar events1 have already demonstrated the risk, disrupting GPS services, forcing flight diversions, and damaging satellites. The effects of solar storms can cause:

  • Damage to satellites, spacecraft and/or astronauts that are stationed beyond Earth
  • Loss of satellite hardware, damaging solar panels and circuits
  • Impact to airline travel, due to navigational errors and potential risk of radiation for airline crew and passengers
  • Lowered food production as agriculture can be impacted by disrupted GPS navigation

The implications include both academic research and operational preparedness. The new model will provide tools to help experts plan for solar storms, which can disrupt the Earth’s technological infrastructure.

“Think of this as a weather forecast for space,” said Juan Bernabe-Moreno, Director of IBM Research Europe, UK and Ireland. “Just as we work to prepare for hazardous weather events, we need to do the same for solar storms. Surya gives us unprecedented capability to anticipate what’s coming and is not just a technological achievement, but a critical step toward protecting our technological civilization from the star that sustains us.”

Traditional solar weather prediction relies on partial satellite views of the Sun’s surface, historically making accurate forecasting extremely difficult. Surya addresses this typical limitation by training on the largest curated high resolution heliophysics dataset. This dataset is designed to help researchers better study and evaluate critical space weather prediction tasks. Examples of these tasks, which Surya has been tested on, include predicting solar flares, the speed of solar winds, solar EUV spectra prediction and the emergence of active regions on the Sun.

In early testing, researchers report achieving a 16 percent improvement in solar flare classification accuracy, which researchers report as a very substantial improvement compared to previous methods. In addition to the binary solar flare classification task, Surya is built to visually predict solar flares for the first time, providing a high resolution image of where the flare is predicted to occur up to two hours out.

The technical challenges were immense. Surya was trained on nine years of high-resolution solar observation data from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory. These solar images are 10 times larger than typical AI training data, requiring a custom multi-architecture solution to handle the massive scale while maintaining efficiency. The result is a model with unprecedented spatial resolution that can resolve solar features at scales and contexts not previously captured in large-scale AI training workflows.

“We are advancing data-driven science by embedding NASA’s deep scientific expertise into cutting-edge AI models,” said Kevin Murphy, chief science data officer at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “By developing a foundation model trained on NASA’s heliophysics data, we’re making it easier to analyze the complexities of the Sun’s behavior with unprecedented speed and precision. This model empowers broader understanding of how solar activity impacts critical systems and technologies that we all rely on here on Earth.”

Surya is part of a broader effort at IBM to embrace generative and automated approaches that empower algorithms to be discovered, tested, and evolved at scale. Surya is one example of how IBM is positioning AI not just as a tool, but as a driver of scientific discovery. By releasing Surya on Hugging Face, IBM and NASA are democratizing access to advanced tools for understanding and forecasting solar weather and scientific exploration. Researchers worldwide can now build upon this foundation to develop specialized applications for their regions and industries.

This model is part of a larger collaboration between IBM and NASA to use AI technology to explore our planet and solar system. It joins the Prithvi family of foundation models, which includes a geospatial model and a weather model. Last year, IBM and NASA released the Prithvi weather model on Hugging Face for scientists and the broader community to develop short- and long-term weather and climate projections.

FOSSIL AND 2025-2026 GLOBAL BRAND AMBASSADOR NICK JONAS RELEASE EXCLUSIVE “MACHINE LUXE” CAPSULE

RICHARDSON, Texas, Aug. 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Global superstar, actor, and philanthropist Nick Jonas has teamed up with leading watch and accessories brand FOSSIL for a bold and nostalgic new collection, launching August 20, 2025. Each limited-edition timepiece blends Jonas’ passion for watch collecting, his distinct personal style and Fossil’s decades-long design heritage to deliver styles that are both timeless and distinctly modern—all while reinvigorating our customers’ love for and personal connection to the brand.

“It’s the use of materials that give this collection a distinct personality. They’re exceptionally personal pieces that elevate any look,” says Nick Jonas. “I’m excited to share my love of watches and this collection with the world.”

A lifelong watch enthusiast whose first watch was a FOSSIL, Jonas has partnered with the brand to mark the full-circle moment with a global campaign, captured in Jonas’ native New Jersey. Shot by renowned creative director and photographer Anthony Mandler, and styled by celebrity image maker, Sydney Lopez, the campaign sees Jonas in iconic styles, participating in activities that marked his childhood like visiting local diners and going to the bowling alley. This nod to Jonas’ childhood era will reignite the same nostalgic memories in customers and brand fans, reminding them of small and monumental moments alike throughout their lives.

“Collaborating with the FOSSIL design team has been a dream come true. They were receptive and open to my ideas throughout the entire process,” said Nick Jonas“I still remember the excitement and pure joy I felt when I purchased my first FOSSIL watch shortly after one of my early performances. I wanted to capture that feeling for today’s customers and give them styles that feel elevated and luxurious, but still embody the nostalgia synonymous with FOSSIL.”

The “Machine Luxe” collection is a reimagined take on our bold and bestselling Machine platform, consisting of seven new watches and two new watch rings. Each style features a statement shaped case and signature knurling, characteristic of the Machine series at large.

The Machine Luxe Sunray Dial watches are available in Blue Vignette and Gold-Toned, featuring finely etched lines that fan out from the center of the dial to create a radiant sunray texture. The Blue Vignette paired with a brown croc-embossed leather strap was a personal request by Jonas, echoing a treasured piece from his own collection.

The Machine Luxe Automatic models elevate the offering with a skeletonized dial that reveals a premium Japanese automatic movement and hand-assembled parts. Available in Gunmetal and Gold-Toned.

Showcasing rich natural materials, the Machine Luxe Stone Dial watches arrive in genuine Malachite, Aventurine, and Marble. The signature knurling extends onto the bracelet, adding a bold twist to the classic dress watch silhouette.

Completing the capsule are the Machine Luxe Watch Rings in Gunmetal and Green Vignette. The rings mirror the timepieces’ aesthetic, bringing signature FOSSIL design details into the brand’s distinct, best-selling watch ring.

“Nick Jonas has a genuine love for watches and an authentic connection with FOSSIL brand, it having been his first watch,” said Melissa Lowenkron, Chief Brand Officer of Fossil. “There’s a sense of nostalgia and personal style he brings to the design—rooted in his own journey—that we know will resonate with fans and collectors alike.”

AI adoption is strong among entry-level workers across sectors and economies – and it’s making work life easier and more enjoyable, reports Generation

  • Analysis finds that 65% of entry-level employees are using AI, and most are self-taught power users.
  • Most users are experiencing clear benefits, with nearly all AI users reporting that it’s enhancing their performance at work and increasing their job satisfaction
  • Survey tracks more than 5,500 entry-level workers in 17 countries, most of whom do not have a college degree, across a range of industries

WASHINGTON, Aug. 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — A new global survey from Generation, the employment nonprofit that trains and places people into meaningful careers, reveals how entry-level workers are rapidly adopting AI tools – while also exposing some divides between those confidently using AI and those not yet there.

The report, AI at Work: A Global Entry-Level Perspective, was developed with support from MetLife Foundation. It draws on responses from more than 5,500 Generation global alumni who graduated in 2023 and 2024. It focuses on the AI experience of entry-level workers, most without a college degree, across a range of industries and 17 diverse economies. This offers a fresh perspective since most surveys have focused on professional service workers in high-income countries.

AI is already part of daily life for many

The analysis shows that AI use is widespread among entry-level employees, with 65% reporting that they use AI at work. Half are adopting AI on their own initiative, while the rest use tools provided by their employers or a combination of the two.

Among AI users, 79% engage with AI tools at least once a week, rising to 89% in the tech sector. More than a third (37%) use AI daily.

Men are heavier users of AI than women

AI use among women lags that among men, with 53% of women across sectors saying they use it at work versus 76% of men. This gap narrows when you look specifically at the tech sector, with 80% of women saying they are using AI and 86% of men.

Sector differences are strong. Within tech and customer service & sales sectors, adoption across genders is high – 87% and 80% respectively. However, adoption in the green economy and skilled trades remains low, with just 12% and 10% of entry-level employees in these sectors using AI.

AI is being used in multiple ways by employees

Entry-level employees are using AI for a broad range of tasks. In the tech sector, for example, 67% of respondents use AI for multiple functions – including learning (61%), content creation (49%), and administrative tasks (44%). In customer service and sales, content creation (43%) and learning (35%) are the top uses.

And while use is lower in green jobs and skilled trades, early adopters in these fields are using AI to primarily learn new skills and create content.

Global adoption is strong – but perceived benefits differ

Despite uneven uptake, most users are seeing clear benefits, with 94% reporting that AI has improved their ability to do their job – including 63% who say it helped a lot. Perhaps even more striking: 91% say AI has made their work more enjoyable, with 59% reporting a significant increase in job satisfaction.

However, the perceived value of AI varies across countries. In upper-middle-income countries, 70% of entry-level workers say AI has greatly improved their job performance – compared to 64% in lower-middle-income countries and 49% in high-income countries. Similar trends hold for enjoyment: employees in emerging economies are more likely to say AI has made their work more fulfilling.

Clarity around use cases would help further AI adoption

While adoption is strong overall, 35% of entry-level employees surveyed are not yet using AI at work. Among this group, 72% say they’re interested – but face barriers including a lack of training (30%), uncertainty about how AI applies to their role (30%), and not having enough time to learn (12%). Only a small share cite trust issues or a lack of clear benefit.

The full report is available here. Generation will continue to survey alumni to gather their perspectives as they adopt AI, helping to shape Generation’s programs and offering an ongoing window into the experience of entry-level workers in a variety of sectors around the world.

Dr. Mona Mourshed, Founding Global CEO of Generation, said:

“AI is reshaping the workplace — and across our thousands of alumni, most of whom do not have a college degree, we see entry-level employees are charging ahead, using tools to learn faster, work smarter, and enjoy their jobs more. We need to ensure every worker, in every sector, has the access and support to begin harnessing the power of AI in their roles.”

Tia Hodges, President and CEO, MetLife Foundation and Head of Corporate Giving and Volunteerism, MetLife, said:

“At MetLife Foundation, we recognize the immense potential AI and other emerging technologies hold for expanding opportunities in our communities. That’s why, we’re proud to support Generation’s efforts to help individuals build the skills they need to be competitive in today’s workforce. We’ve seen firsthand how AI can be a force multiplier for individuals and companies, and we are committed to making sure everyone, regardless of where they are in their career, can leverage and benefit from technology.”

Cell therapy is promising in treating psychiatric disorders, such as depression. — A proof-of-principle study published in “Cell Stem Cell” by the laboratory of Dr. Chen, founder of UniXell Biotech, suggests this.

SHANGHAI, Aug. 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — On August 11, 2025, the research team led by Professor Yuejun Chen, founder of UniXell Biotech, published an article titled “Human stem cell-derived A10 dopaminergic neurons specifically integrate into mouse circuits and improve depression-like behaviors” in Cell Stem Cell, featured as a cover story. This study marks the first establishment of a technique to efficiently and directionally differentiate human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) into A10 subtype dopamine neurons. This breakthrough lays a critical scientific foundation for cell therapy of psychiatric disorders such as depression.

In this study, the R&D team of UniXell Biotechnology played a crucial role in manuscript preparation/cell differentiation, transplantation, and immunohistochemistry analysis/cell line establishment, driving the entire process from proof-of-concept to publication and providing key support for the high-quality presentation of the research outcomes.

Depression is one of the most common mental disorders in the 21st century, projected to become one of the top three causes of global disease burden by 2030. Despite the widespread clinical use of existing antidepressant drugs, approximately one-third of patients suffer from treatment-resistant depression (TRD), showing poor response to current pharmacotherapies. The fundamental symptoms exhibited by depression patients, such as anhedonia and anxiety disorders, are closely associated with the regulatory network of A10 dopaminergic neuron subtypes.

The authors found that whether hPSC-derived A10 dopaminergic neurons were transplanted into the mouse VTA (orthotopic transplantation) or the nucleus accumbens (heterotopic transplantation), the grafted cells could accurately project to the target brain regions of endogenous A10 subtype dopaminergic neurons and specifically integrate into the host neural circuits. This result demonstrates that A10 dopaminergic neurons possess remarkable subtype specificity and precise neural circuit integration capabilities.

When chemogenetically engineered transplanted A10 dopaminergic neurons were activated by specific ligands, the host mice exhibited significant anti-anxiety and anti-depression phenotypes in behavioral experiments. This study is the first to demonstrate that transplantation of hPSC-derived A10 dopaminergic neuron subtypes can reconstruct this neural circuit and improve behavioral abnormalities in modeled mice, providing a novel approach for cell therapy in psychiatric disorders.

“This represents a milestone in the relatively unexplored field of cell therapy for mental illnesses. The study will initiate the clinical translation of using A10 dopaminergic neurons for depression at UniXell, which I believe will establish UniXell as a leading biotech in the field of cell therapy for psychiatric disorders,” said Dr. Chen.
