SilkLife: Chula Researchers Transform Thai Silk into Medical Innovation

BANGKOK, Feb. 10, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Researchers at Chulalongkorn University are redefining the role of Thai silk by developing silk protein into a versatile platform for medical products, aiming to reduce Thailand’s reliance on imported biomaterials while creating sustainable income for farmers.

SilkLife: Chula Researchers Transform Thai Silk into Medical Innovation
SilkLife: Chula Researchers Transform Thai Silk into Medical Innovation

The SilkLife research project, led by Associate Professor Dr. Juthamas Ratanavaraporn of the Faculty of Engineering, converts silk protein into various medical applications, including pain-relief and sleep-aid patches, artificial tissues, and injectable joint gels. The initiative addresses a key challenge facing Thailand’s rapidly expanding medical industry, which still depends heavily on imported materials such as collagen and hyaluronic acid.

Thai silk, traditionally valued as a cultural heritage textile, possesses unique biomedical properties. Its primary protein, fibroin, is naturally strong, biocompatible, and safely degrades into amino acids in the body. Unlike silk from other countries, Thai silk has a natural golden hue and a hydrophobic molecular structure, enabling it to bind effectively with certain drug compounds and making it suitable for targeted drug delivery systems.

The SilkLife project adopts a comprehensive approach spanning the entire value chain. The research team established an organic silkworm farming model on five rai of land in Ratchaburi province, certified under Thailand’s organic agriculture standards. Controlled, closed-system rearing facilities—certified under Thai Agricultural Standard 8203—ensure consistent quality year-round. Contract farmers are trained to follow strict operating procedures to minimize contamination.

High-quality cocoons are processed at a pilot plant meeting ISO 13485 manufacturing standards and ISO 10993 medical safety standards. Achieving medical-grade silk protein requires three to four years of development from upstream farming to midstream processing.

Initial products focus on external use to build safety and market confidence, including hydrogel skin patches that release herbal pain-relief compounds for up to eight hours, and CBD sleep patches designed as an alternative to high-dose oral administration. More advanced applications include biodegradable scaffolds for dental and tissue regeneration and injectable silk-based joint gels now entering early-stage clinical trials at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital.

Beyond medical innovation, the project delivers economic impact. Participating farmers can sell medical-grade silk cocoons at prices several times higher than conventional market rates. Researchers emphasize that Silklife’s platform approach allows a single material to be developed into dozens of products, positioning Thai silk as a competitive, homegrown alternative in global medical markets.

MerryLife Biomedical Reports Positive Phase 1 Results and Plans for Global Phase 2 Trial for TML-6, an Oral Multi-Targeted Investigational Therapy for Alzheimer’s Disease

TAINAN, Feb. 10, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — MerryLife Biomedical Inc., a clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on neurodegenerative diseases, today announced positive Phase 1 results for TML-6, its investigational oral therapy for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The study demonstrated that TML-6 was generally well tolerated with a favorable safety profile, supporting its continued clinical development.

TML-6 is designed to modulate the autolysosomal system and interconnected cellular pathways involved in protein clearance, neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and aging-related neuronal dysfunction—key biological processes underlying the progression of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases (PD). Disruption of these pathways is increasingly recognized as central to neurodegeneration.

Based on these results, MerryLife is preparing to initiate a global Phase 2 program in early Alzheimer’s disease, enrolling individuals with mild cognitive impairment and mild dementia. The study is planned to include approximately 210 participants across the United States, Sweden, and Taiwan. The Phase 2 program will further evaluate safety and tolerability and explore disease-related biomarkers associated with multi-pathway modulation.

In parallel, MerryLife is exploring the potential relevance of TML-6 in Parkinson’s disease, where similar pathological mechanisms contribute to disease progression. The company will present additional preclinical data and clinical development insights on TML-6 at the AD/PD™ 2026 International Conference in Copenhagen on March 19, 2026.

“Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s arise from complex, interconnected biological processes that are difficult to address with single-target therapies,” said Dr. Ih-Jen Su, Chief Executive Officer of MerryLife Biomedical. “TML-6 represents a multi-targeted approach with an oral formulation and a favorable safety profile, supporting earlier intervention and the potential to slow disease progression in areas of significant unmet medical need.”

About TML-6
TML-6 is a first-in-class, orally administered, multi-targeted investigational therapy designed to modulate autolysosomal and aging-related pathways implicated in neurodegeneration.

Medical biotech Ferronova completes enrolment for gastric and oesophageal cancer image-guided surgery trial.

ADELAIDE, Australia, Feb. 10, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Australian company Ferronova announced today it has completed enrolment of patients for its two-year trial to progress commercialisation of FerroTrace, a novel nanoparticle image-guided surgery solution for hard-to-treat cancers.

The technology is intended to assist surgeons in identifying lymph nodes involved in metastatic spread, thereby enabling targeted removal and reducing the risk of post-surgical recurrence. The study is the first of its kind in which tracer injection to map lymphatic drainage pathways is performed prior to any chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Key highlights

  • Patient enrolment has been completed in adults with gastric and oesophageal cancers across five hospital sites in Australia, with a total of 62 patients enrolled, exceeding initial projections.
  • Evaluations and results from the trial are expected to be available in July 2026.
  • The trial follows several smaller first-in-human studies conducted between 2020-2024.
  • FerroTrace addresses an unmet need in surgical guidance for hard-to-treat cancers, with oesophageal and stomach cancers in the world’s top five deadliest cancer types.
  • Stomach and oesophageal cancers affect more than 1.8 million people worldwide each year, with recurrence after surgery occuring in up to 60% of patients. In Australia, three-year survival for oseophageal cancer remains at just 27%.

FerroTrace uses super-paramagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles that bind to cells within lymph nodes. The technology is designed to support more precise surgery, helping surgeons to identify and remove cancer-affected lymph nodes that are frequently missed during standard procedures.

Stewart Bartlett Chief Executive Officer of Ferronova said he was delighted that the trial had completed recruitment.

“The investigators at the Royal Adelaide, Queen Elizabeth, Flinders, Austin Hospital, and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre have done an amazing job recruiting patients in a relatively short time. We are looking forward to working with them to complete the final follow-up visits and analyse the data.”

“We hope to give surgeons the opportunity to work with greater diagnostic accuracy and precision, enabling less invasive surgery in some patients, and more precise surgery overall, ensuring all cancer-affected lymph nodes are identified and removed.  This trial is an important step in validating our technology as we move towards commercial availability.”

Appointment of new advisory board member
Ferronova has also appointed a new scientific advisory board member with Ms Aki Smith, a patient advocate, taking up the role this month. Ms Smith founded the US-based charity ‘Hope for Stomach Cancer’ following her father’s diagnosis. The charity provides resources and support to those living with stomach cancer and their families.

Mr Bartlett welcomed Ms Smith to the advisory board, saying her lived experience will help to inform future trial design and innovations.

“The role of Ms Smith and other members for the scientific advisory board is very important to our company.  Ferronova is deeply committed to finding new solutions for those affected by these aggressive and difficult to treat cancers.

“We are very supportive of patients having a greater voice in the development and evaluation of new treatments, including those involving our technology.”
