Demonstrating Household Automation in a Real-World Home Setting
At CES 2026, the company will show LG CLOiD operating in diverse home environments. In one scenario, the robot retrieves milk from a refrigerator and places a croissant into an oven to prepare breakfast. After household occupants leave, LG CLOiD initiates laundry cycles and folds and stacks garments after drying. These tasks display LG CLOiD’s ability to understand the user’s lifestyle and precise appliance control

Hardware Designed for Operation in Living Spaces
LG CLOiD consists of a head unit, torso with two articulated arms and a wheeled base equipped with autonomous navigation. The torso can tilt to adjust its height, enabling the robot to pick up objects from knee level and above.

Each arm has seven degrees of freedom, matching the mobility of a human arm. The shoulder, elbow and wrist allow forward, backward, rotational and lateral motion, while each hand includes five independently actuated fingers for fine manipulation. This configuration allows LG CLOiD to handle a wide range of household objects and operate in kitchens, laundry rooms and living areas.

The wheeled base uses autonomous driving technology derived from LG’s experience with robot vacuums and the LG Q9. This form factor was selected for stability, safety and cost-effectiveness, with a low center of gravity that reduces the risk of tipping if a child or pet makes contact.

LG CLOiD’s Head as a Mobile AI Home Hub
The head functions as a mobile AI home hub. It is equipped with a chipset – which functions as LG CLOiD’s brain – a display, a speaker, cameras, various sensors and voice-based generative AI. Collectively, these elements allow the robot to communicate with humans through spoken language and “facial expressions,” learn the living environments and lifestyle patterns of its users and control connected home appliances based on its learnings.

Vision-Based Physical AI: VLM and VLA
At the core of LG CLOiD is the company’s Physical AI technology, which combines:

  • Vision Language Model (VLM) — converts images and video into structured, language-based understanding
  • Vision Language Action (VLA) — translates visual and verbal inputs into physical actions

These models have been trained on tens of thousands of hours of household task data, enabling LG CLOiD to recognize appliances, interpret user intent and execute context-appropriate actions such as opening doors, or transferring objects.

Integration with ThinQ and ThinQ ON
LG CLOiD’s capabilities expand significantly through its integration with LG’s smart home ecosystem, including the AI Home Platform “ThinQ™” and Hub “ThinQ ON.” This seamless connectivity allows LG CLOiD to orchestrate a wider range of services across LG’s various appliances.

LG Actuator AXIUM: Robotics Components for Physical AI
Alongside the home robot, LG is introducing LG Actuator AXIUM™, a new brand of robotic actuators for service and robots.

An actuator serves as a robot’s joint, integrating a motor that generates rotational force, a drive that controls electrical signals and a reducer that regulates speed and torque. As one of the most critical and cost-intensive components in a robot, actuators are widely regarded as a strategic upstream technology in the emerging era of Physical AI.

LG has accumulated world-class component technology through its market-leading home appliance business. This expertise in component technology is expected to be the foundation for delivering key competitive advantages in actuators, such as lightweight and compact design, high efficiency and high torque. In addition, LG’s modular design technology enables customizing, multi-variety production that is necessary for manufacturing advanced robots, which require dozens of types of actuators.

Roadmap Toward AI-Driven Homes
LG plans to continue developing home robots with practical functions and forms for housework. Simultaneously, the company will expand the application of its accumulated robotics technology to home appliances, creating categories such as “Appliance Robots” like robot vacuums, and “Robotized Appliances” like refrigerators with doors that open automatically as a person approaches. The ultimate goal is to create an “AI Home” where housework is entrusted to AI appliances and home robots, allowing people to rest, enjoy themselves and spend their time on more valuable activities.

“The LG CLOiD home robot is designed to naturally engage with and understand the humans it serves, providing an optimized level of household help,” said Steve Baek, president of the LG Home Appliance Solution Company. “We will continue our relentless efforts to achieve our Zero Labor Home vision, making housework a thing of the past so that customers can spend more time on the things that really matter.”

Visitors to CES 2026 (January 6-9) can experience the tangible benefits of LG CLOiD and the Zero Labor Home through a variety of real-life scenarios at LG’s booth (#15004, Las Vegas Convention Center).

Sports and Tourism Merge in Sanya as 2025 Marathon Wraps Up Along Scenic Coast

The race reflects Hainan’s broader effort to link international sporting events with economic development and global engagement

SANYA, China, Jan. 4, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — The 7th Hainan (Sanya) Marathon wrapped up on Sunday, attracting 14,000 participants from 20 countries and regions. Held under the theme “Run Past Your Limits. Straight to the Sea,” the event combined tropical coastal scenery with competitive racing through diverse race formats, enhanced services, and digital innovation. After a grueling race, China’s Yang Yuan won the women’s full marathon in 2:50:11, while Zhao Guohu claimed the men’s title in 2:23:21.

Zhao Guohu, winner of the men’s division, said the flat course and Sanya’s warm climate lend themselves to strong performances. He added that the energy and support of spectators and volunteers along the route helped create an especially memorable atmosphere.

To deliver a unique marathon experience in Sanya through the integration of sports, tourism, and culture, organizers reimagined the role of the aid stations. Cultural Tourism Experience Stations were positioned along the course. In addition to providing race support, the stations featured traditional crafts and folk arts, Li and Miao ethnic song and dance performances, tastings of local cuisine, and interactive culture-focused activities. Together, these elements offered runners a closer look at Sanya’s local character while adding cultural context and on-course engagement to the event.

In parallel, organizers provided runners with coordinated services covering accommodation, transportation, sightseeing, and shopping. Partner benefits included discounted hotel rates with late checkout, reduced airfare offers, and duty-free shopping perks. Digital initiatives included the issuance of blockchain-based digital commemorative medals, available for purchase through the Alipay platform. Virtual races hosted on Alipay, DingTalk, and Amap also enabled remote participation.

Yang Yong, General Manager of Events and Commercialization at event partner Orange Lion Sports (formerly Alibaba Sports), said organizers drew on resources across the Alibaba ecosystem – including Taobao, Fliggy, Alibaba Health, Ant Chain, and Amap – to broaden the event’s reach and connect more effectively with domestic and international running audiences, encouraging greater participation in event-related spending.

Since early 2024, Hainan has hosted over 700 sporting events, attracting more than 4 million spectators and generating over 7 billion yuan in consumer spending. With its favorable climate and natural setting, the Sanya Marathon continues to drive local economy through sport-tourism integration.

Dreame Showcases the Future of Wet & Dry Vacuum Cleaning at CES 2026

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 4, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Dreame Technology will exhibit at CES 2026 in Las Vegas from January 6 to 9. Its Wet & Dry Vacuum Business Unit will showcase core technologies and new products, highlighting the latest advancements in wet & dry vacuum cleaning within Dreame’s whole-home smart ecosystem, under the brand promise “All Dreams in One Dreame.”

Flagship Wet & Dry Vacuum Technologies on Display

Across two exhibition zones at the Las Vegas Convention Center (Central Hall, Booth 17726) and the Venetian Expo (Booth 52323), Dreame will showcase how its wet & dry vacuum innovations integrate heat, steam, and AI-powered assistance to simplify cleaning and deliver consistent results in real homes. Beyond individual features, these advancements reduce manual effort, minimize repeated passes, and address persistent deep-cleaning challenges faced by households worldwide.

These technology approaches are reflected across Dreame’s flagship wet & dry vacuum portfolio on display. H15 Pro Heat, a recipient of the CES 2026 Innovation Award, represents Dreame’s first hot water floor cleaning vacuum using 185°F (85°C) hot water and an AI robotic arm to loosen greasy residue and improve cleaning under low furniture and along edges through a 180° lie-flat design. Meanwhile, H16 Pro Steam features the world’s first dual AI robotic arms and a dual heat cleaning system, combining 392°F (200°C) steam with 194°F (90°C) water to support deeper, chemical-free sanitization for stubborn floor messes.

Why Wet & Dry Vacuums Matter

As modern households face increasingly diverse floor cleaning needs, traditional routines often require multiple tools and repeated steps to handle both wet spills and dry debris. Wet & dry vacuums address this challenge by combining vacuuming and floor washing into a single process, enabling everyday messes—such as liquids, crumbs, dust, and pet hair—to be cleaned in one pass. By reducing the need to switch between devices, this category helps simplify daily floor care and improve cleaning efficiency, making it well-suited for busy households, including families with children and pets.

Authorities Assess Possible Casualties After Overnight Fire in Luang Prabang

Fire in Luang Prabang destroyed seven homes on 3 January. (Photo: ໂທລະພາບແຂວງຫຼວງພະບາງ)

A fire tore through a public housing area in Wat That village, Luang Prabang, in the early hours of 3 January, destroying seven homes and forcing residents to flee.

The blaze broke out at around 1:30 am, according to the head of Wat That village, who said his son alerted him after flames erupted at a rented property owned by a resident known locally as Noi.

The fire started in a row of three connected houses before spreading rapidly to nearby homes.

Authorities confirmed that five houses were completely destroyed, while two others suffered partial damage. Firefighters, police, and local officials rushed to the scene to contain the blaze, evacuate residents, and secure the area.

Unofficial sources reported potential deaths, but authorities have not confirmed any fatalities as of publication.

Officials said they are still verifying information and assessing the full impact of the incident.

The cause of the fire and the total value of losses remain under investigation.

Later in the day, Provincial Party Secretary Bounluam Manivong, along with provincial leaders and representatives from Luang Prabang, visited the site to inspect the damage and offer support to affected families.

The Provincial Department of Labour and Social Welfare, the Red Cross, and local social welfare offices delivered relief supplies and basic necessities as initial assistance.

Emergency services continue to monitor the area, while officials work to support displaced residents and determine next steps.

US Strikes Reported in Venezuela as Caracas Declares National Emergency

Picture of fire at Fuerte Tiuna, Venezuela's largest military complex, after a series of explosions in Caracas on January 3, 2026. Loud explosions, accompanied by sounds resembling aircraft flyovers, were heard in Caracas around 2:00 am (0600 GMT) on January 3, an AFP journalist reported. The explosions come as US President Donald Trump, who has deployed a navy task force to the Caribbean, raised the possibility of ground strikes against Venezuela. (Photo by Luis JAIMES / AFP)

UPDATED on 3 January at 4:43 PM

United States President Donald Trump claimed on 3 January that American forces had “captured” Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife during what he described as a “large-scale strike” in Venezuela.

Trump made the statement amid reports of explosions across Caracas earlier the same day, which Venezuelan authorities said were caused by foreign military attacks on sites in and around the capital.

Attacks

Explosions were reported in Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, early on 3 January, prompting sharply differing accounts from Venezuelan authorities and the United States amid heightened bilateral tensions.

Local sources and international media reported multiple explosions near military installations in and around Caracas. Videos circulating online showed flames and thick smoke rising from several locations, while authorities reported power outages in nearby communities.

Independent verification of the cause of the explosions remains unavailable.

Venezuela Declares Emergency, Blames US

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro condemned the incident, describing it as “external aggression” and declaring a nationwide state of emergency. In an official statement, the government accused the United States of launching military strikes aimed at undermining Venezuela’s sovereignty and seizing its oil and mineral resources.

Caracas rejected any suggestion that the blasts were accidental and ordered security forces to activate national defence plans. Authorities also called on political and social organisations to mobilise in response.

The incident follows months of rising tensions between Washington and Caracas. US officials have repeatedly accused Venezuela’s leadership of involvement in drug trafficking and regional instability, claims Venezuelan authorities deny, saying the United States seeks regime change and control over strategic resources.

US Issues Security Warning, Stops Short of Confirmation

US officials have not publicly confirmed carrying out military strikes. American media outlets cited unnamed US officials saying the administration was aware of reports of explosions and aircraft activity over Caracas.

Meanwhile, the US government issued a security alert warning American citizens not to travel to Venezuela and advising those already in the country to shelter in place.

The US Embassy in Bogotá said it was aware of reports of explosions in and around Caracas and reiterated warnings against travel to Venezuela.

Authorities in Caracas continued to assess the situation at the time of publication. The Laotian Times will provide updates as more information becomes available.
