Garik Israelian, Peter Gabriel, Mary Lewis, Sir Brian May, Nick Van-Lawick, Merlin Van-Lawick, Angel Van-Lawick – Jane Goodall’s grandchildren.

The medal will be awarded for the first time at STARMUS VIII, to be hosted in Tenerife and La Palma in 2026.

The announcement took place exactly ten years after STARMUS and Professor Stephen Hawking stood together at the Royal Society to launch the Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication, marking a decade of STARMUS’s commitment to uniting science, art, and humanity.

STARMUS Director and Co-Founder Garik Israelian said:
“Ten years ago, Stephen Hawking joined us to launch a medal that inspired millions to look to the stars. Today, with the blessing of Jane Goodall and her family, we launch a medal that calls us to protect the Earth. STARMUS VIII will unite these two visions — the cosmic and the planetary — in a festival dedicated to the search for truth.”

Stephen Hawking once said of STARMUS:
“In a world beset by so many terrible problems, STARMUS offers a ray of hope… a unique debating chamber for the future of the human race.”

In 2026, STARMUS will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Stephen Hawking Medal, honoring a decade of scientists, creators, musicians, filmmakers, and communicators who have carried forward Hawking’s vision—encouraging humanity to question deeply and embrace the power of science.

At the same time, the festival will award the inaugural STARMUS Jane Goodall Earth Medal, a global honor recognizing voices who protect the planet, defend biodiversity, and redefine humanity’s relationship with nature. Approved and blessed by Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, and her family, the medal extends the STARMUS mission into environmental and humanitarian action.

Jane Goodall held a cherished role within STARMUS as an Advisory Board Member, Hawking Medal laureate, keynote speaker, and a source of inspiration—particularly for the people of La Palma following the volcanic eruption. In private conversations with Israelian and Mary Lewis, she gave her blessing for an environmental and humanitarian medal to bear her name.

Merlin Van-Lawick, Jane Goodall’s grandson, said:
“We are deeply grateful that STARMUS chose to honor my grandmother in this way. We fully support this initiative, and Jane has given it her blessing.”

STARMUS Co-Founder Sir Brian May added:
Jane Goodall and Stephen Hawking changed how we see the world — one by looking to the stars, the other by reminding us to protect life on Earth. Bringing their legacies together is profoundly necessary for our time.”

Nobu Manchester breaks ground as Robert De Niro visits Manchester with Salboy

MANCHESTER, England, Dec. 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Robert De Niro visited Manchester with fellow Nobu Hospitality founders Chef Nobu Matsuhisa and Meir Teper, joining Salboy on site to mark the Nobu Manchester groundbreaking and the next stage of the project’s delivery.

Nobu Manchester Groundbreaking Event Highlights – Robert De Niro visited Manchester with fellow Nobu Hospitality founders Chef Nobu Matsuhisa and Meir Teper, joining Salboy on site to mark the Nobu Manchester groundbreaking and the next stage of the project’s delivery.

  • The ceremony was hosted by the Nobu Hospitality founders (Robert De Niro, Chef Nobu Matsuhisa and Meir Teper) and Salboy’s co-founders (Fred Done and Simon Ismail).
  • Ceremony marks the symbolic first step towards a 246-metre tower, expected to be the UK’s tallest building outside London
  • The tower will include a signature Nobu restaurant, a 160-room hotel and 452 Branded Residences
  • Regenerates a 40,500 sq ft brownfield site in an industrially historic city centre location

The founders of Nobu Hospitality joined Salboy, the Manchester property development and funding company and leading Manchester developer, to celebrate the Nobu Manchester groundbreaking ceremony on the site of Manchester’s newest skyscraper. The project represents a significant moment for UK property, bringing global hospitality and Branded Residences to Manchester.

Standing at 246 metres when it is expected to be completed in 2031, the tower will transform the fast-evolving Manchester skyline and bring a fresh new approach to sophisticated living and first-class dining to the city’s residents and visitors.

Developed in a partnership between Nobu Hospitality, Salboy and construction firm Domis, the tower will be home to a signature Nobu restaurant (Nobu Manchester), a 160-room luxury hotel (Nobu Hotel Manchester), and 452 Branded Residences (Nobu Residences Manchester). Together, these assets will cater to property buyers, locals, and visitors seeking sophisticated living and hospitality experiences in the UK’s fastest-growing city.

The partners have announced that the Nobu restaurant, serving a world-class and endlessly innovative Japanese dining experience, will be situated on the ground floor of the tower, among the site’s original Grade 2 listed, Victorian viaduct arches. The vast brick arches will imbue the space with a strong sense of the city’s industrial heritage, marrying centuries-old architecture with modern cuisines.

Chef Nobu Matsuhisa opened his first restaurant, Matsuhisa, in Los Angeles in 1987. After partnering with actor Robert De Niro, he opened the first Nobu restaurant in New York in 1994 and, since then, has taken his inimitable approach to creating memorable dining experiences in over 50 restaurants worldwide. In 2013, the first Nobu Hotel opened in Las Vegas, paving the way for Chef Nobu, Robert De Niro, and Meir Teper to bring Chef Nobu’s famed attention to detail, innovation, and flair to luxury hotels and branded residences.

The Nobu Residences Manchester, a collection of Branded Residences, mark Nobu’s entry into the UK’s luxury real estate market. Not only will the residences on the upper levels be some of the highest apartments and penthouses in Western Europe, but every property will be designed with refined Japanese-inspired interiors, and residences will enjoy premium amenities, including an exclusive swimming pool, a podium garden offering panoramic views over the city, a gym, and access to Nobu dining.

The Salboy and Nobu Hospitality teams are collaborating with award-winning designers, Bowley James Brindley, to develop interiors that uniquely marry Nobu’s commitment to elevated curated living experiences with a strong sense of Manchester’s industrial and cultural heritage as well as its position on the contemporary world stage.

Chef Nobu Matsuhisa, Robert De Niro and Meir Teper, Nobu Hospitality’s Shareholders, commented: “Breaking ground in Manchester is a defining moment for Nobu in the UK — our first venture beyond London, and the introduction of Nobu Residences to this market. This landmark project — encompassing a hotel, restaurant and residences — marks the debut of Nobu Residences in the United Kingdom. Manchester’s global outlook and dynamic spirit align perfectly with the Nobu brand. We’re proud to bring our signature hospitality, dining and design to the city, and excited to offer both guests and residents an authentic Nobu experience.”

Fred Done, Co-founder of Salboy, said: “Ten years ago, Simon Ismail and I founded Salboy with a clear vision: to change Manchester’s skyline. I believe we are doing just that. I’ve been fortunate to experience exceptional cuisine and hospitality around the world, which is why we chose Nobu as our partner to help realise that vision. Best in class, best in creativity, the best of the best. This is our pièce de résistance— exactly what we wanted to bring to Manchester, the city of firsts. This is why it’s so fantastic to welcome Nobu to our wonderful city.”

Simon Ismail, Co-founder and MD of Salboy, added: “Chef Nobu’s 30-year influence on our culinary tastes can not be understated and I look forward with huge anticipation for the impact he and his team have on Manchester’s established and ambitious dining scene. As a proud Salfordian too, I’m keen to see how Chef Nobu and his team blend local produce and influences from the Northwest’s culinary heritage into the dishes and flavours they are famous for. Beyond the signature restaurant, which will look magnificent under the Victorian arches, being part of Nobu’s journey to extend its leadership in the global luxury hospitality and property markets is an honour. Manchester deserves luxury accommodation to match its growing position on the international stage and the Nobu team has the imagination and track record to make that happen.”

The event comes as Domis, a partner on the scheme, has started enabling works on site with intentions to start construction next year. Salboy expects to launch sales for Nobu Residences Manchester in 2026.

Global Times: ‘Three 30-million’ milestones in auto industry show China’s economic potential: People’s Daily article

BEIJING, Dec. 19, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — China’s economy is vast in scale and full of promise.

The Central Economic Work Conference summarized the key principles of conducting economic work under new circumstances with “five imperatives,” with “it is necessary to fully tap economic potential” ranked first.

Recently, the “three 30-million milestones” in the automotive industry have drawn attention. These milestones offer a clearer view of China’s economic potential.

At the end of October, FAW-Volkswagen celebrated the rollout of its 30 millionth vehicle. Over 34 years, the company has made a leap into high-end intelligent manufacturing and demonstrated the immense potential of the Chinese market for open, win-win cooperation.

On December 10, Changan Automobile marked the production of its 30 millionth Chinese-brand vehicle. It took 30 years to produce the first 10 million units, but only 4.5 years for the third 10 million. This achievement is the fruit of solid efforts to drive quality, efficiency, and dynamic transformations, showcasing the innovation capacity and brand strength of Chinese manufacturing.

On December 11, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers released data showing that from January to November this year, China’s automobile production and sales both exceeded 31 million units. From leading the world in whole-vehicle exports to new-energy vehicles (NEVs) accounting for over half of new car sales, the rapid acceleration of the automotive industry during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25) highlights the advantages of China’s supersized market and its comprehensive industrial system.

“The Chinese economy is like a vast ocean, big, resilient and promising, and that we have the confidence and capability to navigate all kinds of risks and challenges.”

As we advance toward the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-30), by further harnessing the strengths of the socialist system with Chinese characteristics, the advantages of an ultra-large-scale market, a comprehensive industrial system, and abundant talent resources, we will seize the initiative in development amid challenges and storms, and moreover, we will pioneer new prospects and shape the future.

Innovation: A powerful engine

To tap the economic potential, we must first accurately identify where that potential lies. As the world’s second-largest consumer market, China boasts the world’s largest middle-income group and the most comprehensive industrial system. Its economic potential is released through transformation toward innovation and excellence.

From traditional fuel vehicles to NEVs, from electrification to intelligentization, innovation is the powerful engine driving the leapfrog development of the automotive industry.

Changan Automobile has established over 200 laboratories, while BYD and Leapmotor are each leading the way in the NEV sector… The deep integration of the automotive innovation and industrial chains creates new market advantages and enhances developmental autonomy.

The “takeoff” of the low-altitude economy, the empowering role of artificial intelligence (AI), and the “dual improvement in quantity and quality” of innovative drugs… In the first 11 months of this year, sales revenue in China’s high-tech industries increased by 14.7 percent year-on-year. Industries across the board are continuously creating surprises for the market.

Over the past five years, approximately 15 million new-energy vehicles have been sold in rural areas, while over the past three years, China Post has cumulatively delivered more than 10 billion parcels to villages… These vivid figures reflect the vast space for industrial prosperity, consumption upgrading, and infrastructure investment, as well as the vigorous potential of the lower-tier markets in China.

Imbalanced and inadequate development are shortcomings but also contain potential. From promoting high-quality development of county-level economies to strengthening coordinated development among major city clusters, fostering urban-rural integration and regional connectivity broadens new market space and creates new economic growth points.

A strong domestic market is a strategic foundation for Chinese modernization. By tapping potential through industrial depth, seeking opportunities in geographic space, and nurturing new growth from human development, the trend of China’s economy moving toward innovation and excellence becomes more pronounced.

Policy supports

To translate economic potential into development momentum, it is essential to combine policy support with reform and innovation.

The Central Economic Work Conference noted that “many old and new challenges remain in China’s economic development, the impact of external environmental changes is deepening, the contradiction between strong supply and weak demand domestically is prominent, and there are many risk hazards in key areas.” It also emphasized that “most of these are problems of development and transformation, which can be resolved through effort.”

The process of solving problems is the process of unleashing potential.

Take the automotive industry as an example. “Rat race” competition once intensified, with the profit margin of China’s automotive industry falling to 3.9 percent in the first quarter of 2025, lower than the average level of the manufacturing sector.

From launching special campaigns to rectify chaos in the online environment of the automotive industry to releasing the Price Compliance Guidelines for the Automotive Industry (Draft for Comments), these measures have contributed to an improvement in profitability, with the industry achieving a 4.4 percent year-on-year growth in profits during the first 10 months of the year.

How China pulled ahead to become a global leader in electric vehicles? An article on the website of The Washington Post in March of this year argued that for China’s leadership, success in EVs is primarily a triumph of industrial planning.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, ultra-long-term special treasury bonds supported equipment upgrades, spurring social investment; re-lending for technological innovation and technical transformation guided enterprises toward greener, more innovative, and smarter practices; talent cultivation and international cooperation promoted industrial upgrading… Leveraging the value-driven and strategic guiding roles of institutions and policies is a crucial method for stimulating economic potential.

Since the new era, from the world-leading research and application of AI to the leapfrog development of NEVs, these impressive innovative achievements have deepened our understanding of the profound judgment that “attempts to contain us will not succeed” and the strategic consideration of “fully leveraging the strengths of the new national system.”

Tailor-made measures

China is a vast country with significant differences in local conditions. Guided by the principle of “coordinating the whole as one chessboard,” it is essential to tailor measures to local conditions to unleash the comparative advantages and developmental potential of each region, pooling them into a powerful driving force for China’s economic development.

To unleash economic potential, we must skillfully apply dialectical thinking and adhere to the principle of “using the right key for the right lock.”

Balancing the part and the whole is key to identifying strategic positioning and avoiding a “one-size-fits-all” approach.

Anhui Province in East China, “closely focusing on the two keywords of integration and high quality,” leveraged its geographical advantages and industrial chain coordination to become the “leading province in automobiles.” Mohe in Northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province “took developing the ice and snow economy as a new growth point,” turning cold weather into a thriving cold-region vehicle testing industry.

Balancing strengths and weaknesses enables the leveraging of comparative advantages and avoids homogeneous competition.

In the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, innovative clusters are vibrant and collaborative, demonstrating unity and joint efforts. In border regions, port economies and cross-border trade are booming, transforming inland frontiers into open frontiers… By proceeding from reality and pursuing development through positioning, differentiation, and leveraging unique strengths, regions can better achieve coordinated development.

Balancing the domestic and international spheres by adhering to opening-up development avoids isolation.

Building the Asia-Europe Golden Corridor, Xinjiang’s total foreign trade value has successively surpassed three 100-billion-yuan ($14.2 billion) thresholds. Relying on the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port, the number of new foreign-invested enterprises in Hainan has grown at an average annual rate of 43.7 percent over the past five years.

Today’s potential gives birth to tomorrow’s momentum; today’s efforts shape future power.

By grasping developmental trends, strengthening confidence in development, and focusing on managing our own affairs well, we can surely transform boundless economic potential into surging developmental momentum. A strong start in 2026 will help achieve new leaps during the 15th Five-Year Plan period.

Spark X: The Journey to Ready-to-Use 3D Creation

SHENZHEN, China, Dec. 19, 2025 /PRNewswire/ —

“Technology is not just a tool. It becomes part of our lives.”

This is the line in Her, a film about a future where technology feels less like a machine and more like an extension of human emotion. And in many ways, the future that once lived in imagination is no longer fiction. We’re living in a moment where tools that used to feel distant, cold, or intimidating are quietly becoming warmer, simpler, and more integrated into daily routines.

Not long ago, 3D printers were exactly the opposite: complex, technical devices reserved for experts and makers. But today, the whole landscape is shifting rapidly. The gap between complicated technology and ordinary life is narrowing. Creation no longer requires expertise, it simply needs a spark of curiosity.

The Spark that makes Spark X exist

Not just for makers or experts, Spark X stands for moving faster, focusing on simplicity, and reliability that makes creation effortless.

Why make users learn 3D printing when the product itself can handle complexity? By rethinking the 3D printing experience around immediate usability, Spark X makes it possible for anyone to move from idea to creation without being held back by technical barriers or steep learning curves.

Our perspective on this opportunity comes from thousands of conversations over the years of building with our users. Spending countless hours across all social platforms, seeing how people learn, struggle, and celebrate their first successes, has shaped our understanding of what truly matters most to 3D printer users. It became clear to us to find the path of 3D printing: Ready-to-use.

Ready to Use: The Principle Behind Every Spark X Decision

True “ready-to-use” experience comes from understanding exactly where beginners struggle. Every potential sticking point, from unboxing to the first print, is anticipated. Complex calibration, repeated tests, and confusing setup are removed, letting users focus on creation immediately. Intelligent algorithms reduce multi-color waste by 50%, so beginners can experiment freely without worrying about materials, while experienced users retain advanced options for precision and control.

AI acts as a creative partner, taking over tasks that once required experience. It searches globally for models, generates 3D designs from text or images, monitors prints in real time, and intervenes automatically when issues arise. Frequent updates integrate the latest AI capabilities, ensuring the printer grows smarter over time and every print remains reliable and inspiring.

The hotend is one of the most frequently handled parts of a desktop printer, but traditional replacements are risky and intimidating. Users often need to swap nozzles for wear, material changes, performance needs, or troubleshooting—but conventional designs involve heated disassembly, screws, wires, thermal paste, and fragile parts. Many users avoid it entirely, limiting flexibility and efficiency.

Spark X’s quick-change hotend was shaped through eight full design cycles and a complete structural rethink. Early prototypes still relied on threaded retention and partial wiring, which solved speed but not reliability. Later versions explored magnetic coupling, multi-point latches, anti-rotation keys, and finally a floating alignment system capable of repeatedly positioning within 0.05mm. Each iteration exposed new failure modes—from thermal creep affecting connectors, to repeated insertion loosening tolerances, to material expansion shifting alignment. By the final rounds, the team rebuilt the module from the inside out: relocating stress points, isolating heat, reinforcing the datum surfaces, and designing a locking motion that is intuitive yet mechanically robust.

The result is a mechanism that lets users replace a nozzle in three seconds—no tools, no wires, hot-swap supported up to 220°C, and over 500 verified insertion cycles. Maintenance becomes instinctive rather than technical, allowing anyone to change materials freely, recover from issues quickly, and treat the printer like a dependable tool instead of a fragile device.

Every design choice in Spark X, from effortless onboarding to AI-assisted printing to intuitive maintenance, removes barriers between curiosity and creation, setting the stage for the story of how Spark X truly began.

Minds Behind Spark X, Where the Idea Truly Began

Spark X didn’t begin with a single breakthrough or a moment of sudden clarity. It began with a small team that kept returning to the same question:

“Why is 3D printing still hard for so many people? Why can’t the product itself solve the problems, so users can focus directly on ideas?”

Inside the Spark X team, discussions often started from personal stories. The biggest inspiration came from my own family and friends.

I love printing small gifts for loved ones, keychains, tiny avatars, and custom tools. Every time we met, they would look at those prints with curiosity and say, “I really want to try this too. Which printer should I get? And every time, the hesitation arises. Because I knew what recommending a “beginner-friendly” printer really meant: a complicated unboxing, learning slicer software, material differences, parameter setting, and even further troubleshooting. Inevitably, I will be their “free tech support,” guiding them through every step. So after a moment of silence, I usually ended up saying, “Maybe… consider another hobby?”

Yet Spark X was shaped not only by frustrations, but by a few moments that made us feel what a truly effortless 3D printing experience could be. One of the earliest and clearest moments came from the quick-swap hotend. The first time we removed the entire nozzle module in just a few seconds during an internal demo, the room went completely still before anyone reacted. The operation was so simple, so unexpectedly natural, that even our own engineers were momentarily confused, “Wait… It’s already done?” That brief silence told us something important: when a task that used to be intimidating finishes in a snap, creativity becomes possible for far more people. It was the first time we felt how deeply meaningful “effortless” could be.

Another defining moment came when someone went from an idea to a finished print using only the mobile app. Seeing a user generate a design with AI, send it to print, and hold the object in their hand without touching a computer, configuring parameters, or learning a slicer, made the entire team pause. It was a glimpse into a world where creativity truly starts with curiosity, not technical knowledge. That moment became one of the emotional anchors of Spark X: lowering the barrier not by teaching more.

Other moments left their marks in quieter ways. Like watching the machine run steadily during long prints in extreme temperatures, giving us confidence that reliability could be something users feel rather than think about. Or the day a simple ambient glow light transformed the printer from a cold tool into something warm and welcoming, reminding us that people don’t just interact with machines; they live with them, create beside them, and often find comfort in the process itself.

These moments shaped our belief that 3D printing should never demand courage or expertise. Spark X was built on a different idea: Technology removes friction and respects the user’s feelings, and creativity becomes a natural part of life.

Spark X continues to evolve, combining user-centred design, AI-assisted printing, and effortless maintenance. Our goal is to make 3D creation universally accessible, reliable, and inspiring, so anyone can turn curiosity into creation, today and in the future.

About Spark X:

SPARKX is a new 3D printing brand born from Creality’s technical legacy, but engineered for a new generation. We’ve moved beyond intimidating, overly technical machines to create a product you can unbox and start using right away—one that looks cool on your desk and becomes genuinely addictive to play with.

Why did we create this? Because we noticed many young people are actually curious about 3D printing, but are held back by the same thoughts: “It’s too hard to use”, “It looks out of place on my desk”, “I’m just not sure what to do with it.” So we decided to start something new.

With AI that turns selfies into 3D models with one tap, RGB ambient lighting that elevates your desk vibe, and an ultra-simple process that gets you printing in just a few clicks. We wanted to turn the 3D printer into something you’re proud to keep on your desk, something you don’t want to turn off, something that makes your friends say, “Wow.”

That vision could only come to life by truly listening — So we did. We started with a simple mission: build what users actually asked for. We listened to the hopes of experienced creators and the pain points of newcomers. We validated them through rigorous research with thousands of users. Then, we built the SPARKX i7 to bridge that gap. Every feature, from its whisper-quiet operation to its AI-assisted setup, responds directly to your voice. This is 3D printing, redefined by users.
