The theme of the competition this year is “Hong Kong’s Got I&T”. All sectors of the community are invited to put forward I&T solutions focusing on two subjects, namely “I&T for Nature (Yama)” and “I&T for Community (Community Wellness)”, to enhance the experience of nature and create a caring society in Hong Kong. He stated that President Xi Jinping’s proposal of developing new quality productive forces by adapting measures to local conditions in which factors of production being transformed towards digitalisation and intelligentisation, has also been the direction for the Budget this year. As Hong Kong possesses unique advantages in artificial intelligence, data industry, biomedicine and green technology, the Government will develop these key areas in the future, so as to further create room for the I&T development.

The Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, Professor Sun Dong, said in his welcoming remarks that, the winning solutions of the first City I&T Grand Challenge serves as a testament of strong creativity, observation and operability of the people in Hong Kong. He was pleased to learn that some projects have been successfully applied into community for benefit of the general public with the use of technology, while some winners even joined the incubation programmes offered by the HKSTPC and Cyberport to continue their journeys in research and development. Professor Sun also invited the community to participate in the competition and to achieve the “I&T for all” target.

Also speaking at the ceremony, the Chairman of the HKSTPC, Dr Sunny Chai, said that the HKSTPC was delighted to be the co-organising partner of the City I&T Grand Challenge once again. The previous cohort saw a highly enthusiastic response despite the pandemic, with a number of innovations already being trialed in public organisations, including the internationally-recognised “Smart Belt” which transformed navigation for the visually impaired and enhanced their independence while travelling. He looked forward to unearthing more innovative ideas in the competition to solve critical societal issues through I&T.

In addition, the winners of the first City I&T Grand Challenge shared their experiences of the initial competition at the launching ceremony. They believe that the competition provided an ideal platform and resources for them to realise their I&T solutions to bring convenience to daily lives. Through the sharing, it is hoped to inspire society to join this year’s competition and promote social progress through innovation.

The City I&T Grand Challenge is open for submission from April 5 to May 16. Primary and secondary school students, local and non-local university and tertiary students as well as all sectors of the community are invited to participate. HO CHI MINH CITY, VIETNAM – Media OutReach Newswire – 5 April 2024 – Cathay Cargo welcomed its first freighter flight to Ho Chi Minh City on 4 April 2024 after four years, following its suspension in December 2019 due to the pandemic. The weekly flight, CX3148, will operate from Ho Chi Minh City every Thursday, with the freighter first originating from Hong Kong to Hanoi, then routing to Ho Chi Minh City before returning to Hong Kong. This will supplement Cathay Cargo’s current six freighter flights per week from Hanoi to Hong Kong.

Cathay Cargo Freighter Resumption
Cathay Cargo Freighter Resumption

Decades of presence in Vietnam

Cathay Pacific has been operating passenger services between Vietnam and Hong Kong since 1949. The very first flight carried a significant amount of cargo, including diplomatic mail as well as seafood and vegetables. Testament to the significance of the Vietnam market to its global freighter network, Cathay Cargo commenced full freighter services from Ho Chi Minh City and then Hanoi in March 2008.

In 2023, Cathay Cargo shipped an average of almost 2,000 tonnes of cargo from Vietnam every month, of which about 600 tonnes were carried on Cathay Pacific’s twice-daily passenger flights from Ho Chi Minh City. These comprised mainly garments, footwear, fruits, and live and frozen seafood, headed to key destinations such as Hong Kong, the Chinese Mainland, North East Asia, Australia and North America.

More choices for shippers

In addition to greater cargo capacity, the resumption of the freighter service will give shippers in Ho Chi Minh City access to Cathay Cargo’s main-deck solutions, namely Cathay Expert[1] for odd-sized shipments, as well as freight designated as Cargo-Aircraft-Only, such as certain dangerous goods.

Regional Head of Cargo, Southeast Asia Ashish Kapur said: “We are very excited to welcome our freighter back to Ho Chi Minh City again. With factory activities resuming and air cargo demand picking up, it is timely for us to resume our freighter service from the economic heart of Vietnam. Together with our existing twice daily passenger flights serving the city, the addition of our freighter service will give local businesses more choices, especially in terms of our specialised solutions that can be tailored to suit their needs. Whether it is the latest fashion wear from the factories, fresh dragon fruit from the farms or live seafood from the ocean, we are committed to partnering with them on their journey to bring the best of Vietnam to Hong Kong and the rest of the world.”

Country Manager for Vietnam and Cambodia Nicolas Masse said: “Our dedicated team in Ho Chi Minh City has been eagerly awaiting the resumption of our freighter service. We have been working hard to ensure we are operationally ready on the ground and able to respond quickly to our customers’ needs, whatever they may be. Our team of experts are certainly looking forward to working with our cargo handling agents to deliver the best service to our customers.”

Customer centricity at the forefront

With an aim to become the world’s most customer-centric air cargo services brand, Cathay Cargo continues to invest in building its air-cargo expertise to deliver what customers want and to set it and the Hong Kong international aviation hub apart from competitors. Recent investments include Ultra Track, a next-generation track-and-trace tool; putting purchase and confirmation into customers’ hands with Click & Ship; revamping the range of specialist handling solutions; infrastructural upgrades including the Pharma Handling Centre at the Cathay Cargo Terminal; and digitalising processes and using data to benchmark and measure performance.

People Jump Into the Sea to Escape Raging Ferry Fire in Gulf of Thailand. All 108 on Board Are Safe

BANGKOK (AP) — Panicked passengers jumped into the sea to escape a raging ferry fire in the Gulf of Thailand early Thursday, and all 108 people on board were safe.

The overnight ferry from Surat Thani province was about to arrive at Koh Tao, a popular tourist destination off the Thai coast, when one of the passengers suddenly heard a crackling sound and smelled smoke.

Maitree Promjampa said he saw billowing smoke and fire less than five minutes later, and that was when people started shouting and rang the alarm.

“We could barely get the life vests in time,” he told The Associated Press. “It was chaotic. People were weeping … I also teared up.”

Of the 108 people on the ferry, 97 were passengers, Surat Thani officials said on Facebook. The province’s public relations department posted that everyone was rescued with no casualties.

Videos showed people hurrying out of the ferry’s cabin while putting on life vests, as thick black smoke swept across the ferry. It was later engulfed in fire.

Maitree, a Surat Thani resident who often travels to Koh Tao for work, said several boats came to their rescue around 20 minutes after they called for help, but the boats could not get close to the ferry out of fear of explosions. He said people had to jump into the sea to be rescued. Videos showed the ferry was also carrying several vehicles.

“Everyone had to help themselves,” he said.

Officials said the fire was since brought under control. It began in the engine, but the cause is being investigated. The ferry did not sink.

The ferry from Surat Thani to Koh Tao carries both commuters and tourists. Koh Tao is about 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the coast.

HTX Partners with Samsung to Develop Next-Generation Solutions for Frontliners and Bolster National Cybersecurity Efforts

Strategic collaboration focuses on co-developing mobile and wearable devices for Home Team agencies and tackling cybercrimes on a national scale

SINGAPORE – Media OutReach Newswire – 5 April 2024 – Samsung Electronics Singapore and HTX (Home Team Science and Technology Agency) today announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that underscores the organisations’ commitment to advancing online and public safety in Singapore through technology development and innovation.

MoU Samsung HTX Signing

(from left) Dennis Jang, President of Samsung Electronics Singapore, and Chan Tsan, Chief Executive of HTX at the MOU signing session, formalising the partnership and solidifying their commitment to advance public and online safety.

The agreement paves the way for collaborative, co-development initiatives that address the evolving technological needs of Home Team agencies, allowing frontline responders to execute their duties with greater efficiency and safety. The MoU will also facilitate joint efforts to protect citizens from evolving cyber risks and create a safer, trusted digital space in the Republic.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with Samsung and leverage their technological expertise in mobility and wearables to co-create the next generation of frontline technology,” said Chan Tsan, Chief Executive of HTX. “This partnership is poised to serve as a force multiplier for our Home Team officers, providing them with new capabilities that will bolster their safety and elevate their operational ability to safeguard our community and citizens.”

“We are honoured to partner with HTX, one of the world’s foremost science and technology agencies in homeland security. This collaboration underscores our shared vision of driving innovation to elevate efficacy and create a better future,” highlighted Dennis Jang, President of Samsung Electronics Singapore. “With the introduction of Galaxy AI in our Galaxy S24 earlier this year, we witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of innovation on workplace productivity and effectiveness. By combining our capabilities with HTX’s expertise, we are confident in empowering Singapore’s law enforcement agencies with future-ready tools to effectively tackle the dynamic challenges of our changing world.”

The MoU outlines three key areas of collaboration between Samsung and HTX:

1. Enhancing National Cybersecurity: The partnership focuses on strengthening Singapore’s national cybersecurity efforts, particularly in combating scams, spam, and other online risks. Initiatives include pre-loading anti-scam applications like ScamShield App on Samsung devices in Singapore and promoting better cyber hygiene using cybersecurity tools, such as Samsung’s Auto Blocker feature to prevent sideloading and block malicious activities.

Moreover, the MoU facilitates the exchange of information and expertise between Samsung and HTX, with the aim of fostering future innovations to address these online risks nationwide.

2. Augmenting Frontline Operations: Samsung and HTX are committed to co-developing Samsung devices deployed by Home Team agencies. This includes customising Samsung wearables and devices based on specific departmental needs and ensuring the parameters are tailored to local physiological and operational requirements.

Additionally, the MoU facilitates potential trials for innovations such as exoskeleton solutions and ultra-wideband smart devices, thereby enhancing Home Team officers’ operational and communications capabilities on the field. The agreement also enables secure data exchange between Samsung and HTX for trials that measure the physiological parameters of frontline operators. This can lead to advancements in areas like officer safety and well-being.

3. Developing Next-Generation Mobility Solutions: Lastly, Samsung and HTX will focus on developing cutting-edge solutions for the next generation of ruggedised handsets and supporting mobile applications used by law enforcement agencies. By prioritising the development of future-ready mobility solutions, the agreement can help frontliners remain agile and responsive to emerging threats and evolving situations, ultimately improving public safety and security.

The signing of this MoU coincides with Samsung’s presence at Milipol Asia Pacific–TechX Summit 2024, where the company is showcasing its latest innovations designed to empower law enforcement and bolster cyber defence.

Samsung further demonstrates its dedication to innovation by expanding Galaxy AI features to more devices, including the Galaxy S23, Z Flip 5, Z Fold5, and Tab S9 series. This broader integration across the ecosystem highlights Samsung’s commitment to empowering users with intelligent, effective, and future-proof technology.
