A group of 12 expatriates, including international experience ambassadors and cycling enthusiasts, took to the streets of Shanghai by bicycle on Sept 20, joining the “Ride Like a Local” event to explore the city’s cycling culture and urban landscape.

The 4-kilometer ride began at the historic Zhang Yuan, or Zhang Garden, and concluded at Fudeli Park.

It wove through a mix of historic and modern landmarks, including the shikumen-style Fengshengli neighborhood, the cafes and low-rise Shanghai-style houses along Julu Road, the green expanses of Middle Yan’an Road, and the tranquil historic area of North Laochengdu Road.

Co-organized by the Foreign Affairs Office of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, China Daily, and Meituan Bike Sharing, with support from the West Nanjing Road Subdistrict Office in Jing’an district, the event aimed to showcase Shanghai’s cycling infrastructure and promote sustainable urban mobility.

Participants gathered for a pre-ride photo at Zhang Garden, a site once known as a private garden and now a revitalized public space.

They learned about its historical ties to cycling, including Shanghai’s first documented bicycle demonstration, held there in 1886.

The curated route connected historic architecture, cultural venues, green corridors, and local laneways, giving riders an immersive view of the city’s layered identity while highlighting the convenience and accessibility of cycling in Shanghai.

The event also sought to help expatriates strengthen their ties with the city and engage more closely with local community life.

Edwin Montealegre, an international experience ambassador from Costa Rica, praised the convenience and safety of cycling in Shanghai. He noted that finding a bike is effortless, and unlocking one via a simple phone scan takes less than a minute.

According to Montealegre, designated bike lanes provide a safe and comfortable riding experience, separating cyclists from cars and motorcycles.

“Riding a bike in Shanghai is actually really convenient. You can go outside your home, your office, a restaurant or anywhere and easily find a bike. And it’s really safe. Everyone has their own space,” he said.

Mahmoud Soliman, a professor at Shanghai International Studies University and an international experience ambassador from Egypt, has lived in Shanghai for over 10 years. An avid cyclist himself, he expressed his appreciation for Shanghai’s bike-friendly infrastructure and environment.

“I think it is very friendly for cycling, and it’s really convenient to ride from one district to another,” Soliman said.

He added that he often cycles long distances, sometimes carrying his dog in his backpack, enjoying the freedom and convenience it provides.

Soliman also emphasized the environmental benefits of cycling and noted how bike-sharing services are constantly improving.

“The seats have improved. Before, they had a lock, which was really difficult to open. Now you don’t have this kind of lock,” he said, describing the upgrades as making the experience easier and more enjoyable.

The user-friendly design and accessibility of bike-sharing apps also impressed Soliman, who appreciates the ability to easily locate bicycles and report operational issues. He recommended that municipal plans further promote such services, especially with expanded cycling infrastructure like dedicated bike lanes, to encourage more residents to adopt a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.

For those new to Shanghai’s bike-sharing system, getting started is simple. Expats can use Alipay — set their location to Shanghai — and quickly access a range of local lifestyle services, including Meituan Bike Sharing, via the Easy Go platform.

According to Montealegre, such bike-sharing services are not common in his home country, where cycling can be dangerous due to the lack of dedicated bike lanes.

He believes promoting these services is particularly beneficial for foreigners in Shanghai, as it allows them to “see things that you cannot see when you take a taxi or when you are taking the metro or the bus”.

Soliman sees cycling as a faster alternative to taxis in Shanghai’s busy traffic. He also appreciates its environmental benefits, aligning with China’s green initiatives.

He noted, “Shanghai is a very busy city, sometimes the taxi is stuck in the traffic, but the bikes can go very easily. You can easily navigate everywhere.”

The winner will take home a grand cash prize of $20,000 and stand a chance at securing an artiste management contract. Casting is now open to all aspiring and seasoned live-streamers aged 18 to 80.

Contestants will go head-to-head in live-stream challenges that test their ability to entertain, sell, and connect in real-time.

Live-streaming is experiencing exponential growth in Singapore, alongside the video commerce market in Southeast Asia accounting for USD31.8 billion of total e-commerce GMV in 2024, or approximately 20%, according to the e-Conomy SEA report by Google, Temasek, and Bain & Company. Superstreamer Asia aims to ride on this momentum by combining the entertainment of reality TV with the commercial potential of live-streaming.

Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, in support of Superstreamer Asia in Singapore will serve as the platform for the series’ live-selling segments, enabling participants to connect with audiences in Singapore through an engaging and seamless experience. This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to nurturing live-streaming talent and advancing the region’s e-commerce landscape.

At the heart of this ambitious project is Ms Irene Ang, CEO of FLY Entertainment – best known as a pioneering force in Singapore’s entertainment industry. Superstreamer Asia is her brainchild, born from a vision to spotlight live-streamers as the next wave of digital stars.

Irene will also take centre stage as the show’s resident judge, bringing a unique blend of expertise: as a media maven with entrepreneurial insight and charismatic presence!

  • Media Maven: With decades of entertainment and media experience, Irene is perfectly placed to evaluate contestants’ live-selling and performance skills.
  • Entrepreneurial Insight: As a successful businesswoman, she knows what it takes to build a brand and connect with customers – and will guide contestants in honing these skills.
  • Charismatic Presence: Irene’s relatable, engaging personality ensures she connects effortlessly with both contestants and audiences, adding star power and credibility to the competition.

“When I first started FLY Entertainment, people thought I was crazy — an artiste managing other artistes? But we proved it could work,” said Irene Ang, CEO of FLY Entertainment. “Over the years, FLY has never stopped transforming with the times, because the entertainment scene itself keeps evolving. Today, I see the next big shift — live-streamers. They’re not just selling things; they’re entertaining, connecting, building communities. It’s the new stage, the new theatre. We’ve come a long way, and I’m really excited to see where this wave will take us next! Superstreamer Asia isn’t just entertainment, it’s a platform that could launch real, sustainable careers. Live-selling is not a frivolous pursuit, it’s the future of digital commerce.”

With Fly Entertainment, to further leverage upon their stable and reach to artistes to elevate digital commerce and live-streaming. With Shopee, to expand on our tech and e-store services provided to our common brand partners. In 2024 alone, Synagie has opened over 20 new stores on Shopee, on top of those we already operate, across Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore, in the categories of premium beauty, fashion and home & living. Xinjiang transforms as cultural and tourism center

BEIJING, Sept. 26, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — A report from China Daily

From snow-capped mountains to expansive grasslands, and from pristine lakes to desolate deserts, Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region has become a premier tourist destination with its stunning landscapes.

In the 1950s, however, Xinjiang was a distant dream for most people, limited by its remote location and poor transportation. The region’s vast distance and challenging travel conditions made it difficult for many to experience its natural beauty and rich culture firsthand.

Over the past 70 years, Xinjiang has undergone remarkable transformations, particularly in its cultural and tourism sectors, which have become strategic pillars for boosting local well-being and happiness.

The development of Xinjiang’s tourism industry has been closely linked with China’s reform and opening-up policies. In 1978, the Xinjiang tourism bureau was established, and the region received fewer than 100 visitors that year — all of them international. It was not until the 1990s that domestic tourism began to steadily increase.

Wu Feng, president of the Xinjiang Travel Agency Association, has been involved in the region’s tourism industry for 38 years.

At that time, Xinjiang had few tourist attractions and weak infrastructure, Wu recalled. There were primarily two routes: one covering Tianchi Lake, Nanshan Pasture and Turpan, and the other known as the “southern Xinjiang tour”, which included Urumqi, Turpan, Kuqa, Korla, Aksu and Kashgar.

“In the 1990s, it would take at least an hour and a half to travel one way to Nanshan. Now, the same amount of time is enough for a round trip,” Wu said.

Back then, it took three and a half hours to drive to Turpan, so all tour groups had to stay overnight. This changed in the early 2000s with the opening of the highway, which paved the way for more tourism routes, according to Wu.

In recent years, Xinjiang has expanded its service facilities, including transportation, accommodation and dining. With more direct flight routes, interconnected highways, high-speed rail lines and dedicated tourist trains, an increasingly convenient transportation network has spurred rapid development in Urumqi and across the region.

Official data show that in 2024, Xinjiang received more than 300 million visits, with visitor spending reaching 359.54 billion yuan ($50.4 billion), marking year-on-year increases of 14 percent and 21 percent, respectively. In the first quarter of 2025, visits grew by 9.08 percent and spending by 12.58 percent year-on-year.

With the implementation of a tourism-driven strategy, Xinjiang’s cultural and tourism industries have flourished. Using the region’s landscapes as a canvas and integrating culture with tourism, these industries have become key drivers of growth, ranking among Xinjiang’s top 10 industrial clusters.

“The beauty, vastness, harmony, richness, flavor and progress of Xinjiang constitute the core attraction of its cultural and tourism industry cluster,” said Xu Ruijun, Party secretary of the region’s department of culture and tourism.

Today, Xinjiang boasts 18 national 5A-rated tourist sites, ranking third nationwide, and 776 A-rated scenic spots, ranking fourth. It has also established numerous national-level cultural trade hubs, scenic areas, ski resorts, leisure streets, nighttime tourism zones, and demonstration areas for culture-tourism integration. New tourism products and business models are continuing to emerge.

In 2024, Xinjiang welcomed 5.15 million international tourists, a year-on-year increase of 46 percent, generating $4.48 billion in revenue, up 174 percent. From January to April 2025, the region received 1.12 million international visits, a 7.67 percent increase year-on-year, with international tourism revenue reaching $1.07 billion, up 13.18 percent, according to official data.

DIGITIMES Asia Tech Forum 2025: Qualcomm and MediaTek take smartphone rivalry to the cloud in AI chips

NEW YORK, Sept. 26, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — With global smartphone sales leveling off, Qualcomm and MediaTek are taking their long-running rivalry into the fast-growing cloud AI ASIC market. DIGITIMES Research estimates MediaTek controlled 37% of the smartphone application processor market in 2024, ahead of Qualcomm at 27%. Together, the two suppliers accounted for more than 60% of shipments. With handset growth expected to remain stuck in the low single digits, both companies are turning to cloud computing chips as a new source of expansion.

Cloud strategies unveiled at COMPUTEX

Qualcomm and MediaTek outlined new strategies for cloud AI chips and confirmed plans to join Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion consortium, signaling their intent to take on incumbents in high-performance computing. The moves, announced at COMPUTEX 2025, underscore how chipmakers are racing to secure an edge in AI infrastructure, where expertise in HPC SoC design, SerDes interconnects, and advanced manufacturing nodes is critical to compete.

MediaTek focuses on speed and partnerships

DIGITIMES Research analyst Joyce Chen said MediaTek’s competitive edge lies in speed. The company has relied on Arm reference designs and TSMC’s advanced nodes, building up mass-production know-how in smartphones and Chromebooks. It has also joined Nvidia’s DGX Spark GB10 project and partnered with Google on TPU development, accelerating its push into cloud AI ASICs. MediaTek has demonstrated 224G SerDes technology, signaling its in-house interconnect strength and giving it a first-mover advantage through alliances with Nvidia and Google.

Qualcomm emphasizes depth and integration

Qualcomm is taking a different path, focusing on deeper integration. Since acquiring Nuvia in 2021, the company has built its Oryon CPU into a cornerstone of its proprietary IP portfolio. Its 2025 acquisition of Alphawave filled gaps in SerDes and high-speed interconnects, creating a more complete technology stack. Qualcomm also maintains dual foundry options with TSMC and Samsung, enhancing production flexibility. Its Cloud AI 100 and Ultra AI accelerator cards are already deployed in edge inference servers, and it is preparing chips designed for large language model training and inference.

Rivalry that could reshape AI ASIC competition

Chen said both companies now have the capacity to compete in the cloud AI ASIC market. MediaTek’s speed gives it an early edge, while Qualcomm has reinforced its technology base through acquisitions. The outcome, Chen noted, will hinge on how well each can manage costs, meet rising demand for computing power, secure advanced manufacturing capacity, and forge partnerships with cloud providers. What is certain, she added, is that Qualcomm and MediaTek are carrying their rivalry beyond smartphones and into cloud AI chips — a contest that could help define the next era of competition in artificial intelligence hardware.
