Preventing Network Failures Could Save Asia Pacific Businesses Billions Annually, findings by Expereo

50% of Asia Pacific businesses have been forced to urgently re-evaluate their tech infrastructure following a wave of high-profile IT outages.

SINGAPORE – Media OutReach Newswire – 25 September 2025 – Network instability is taking a serious toll on businesses in Asia Pacific (APAC), with over 50% reporting revenue losses of US$5 million or more due to network outages or poor performance. These findings come from an IDC InfoBrief commissioned by Expereo, titled “Enterprise Horizons 2025: Technology Leaders Priorities: Achieving Digital Agility.”

Following a series of high-profile IT disruptions over the past year, ranging from cybersecurity breaches to connectivity failures, half (50%) of APAC businesses have been compelled to re-evaluate their technology infrastructure. As a result, 40% of tech leaders in the region now report that networking and connectivity have risen higher on the C-suite agenda.

The broader impact is that networking/connectivity and cybersecurity now top the list of investment priorities for APAC businesses over the next 12 months (48% for networking/connectivity, 46% for cybersecurity, followed by AI at 38%). Last year in APAC, AI took the top spot (43%) followed by cybersecurity (39%) and networking/connectivity (37%). This highlights that AI is no longer the most urgent technology priority.

The urgency is well-founded. More than one in four APAC organizations (30.7%) say that inadequate network and connectivity performance is actively threatening their growth plans for the coming year. At the same time, 44% report that network limitations are holding back their ability to support large-scale data and AI initiatives. Alarmingly, just 8% of businesses in the region believe their networks are fully prepared to support AI without any barriers.

“To drive a sustainable competitive advantage, connectivity is no longer an IT concern – it is a strategic business imperative, said Ben Elms, CEO of Expereo. “This research confirms what many technology leaders are already experiencing firsthand: connectivity is now the backbone of business. As organizations race to adopt new AI solutions, the C-suite must treat network performance with the same urgency as cybersecurity and AI itself, because without it, businesses simply cannot succeed.”

Eric Wong, President, APAC, at Expereo, added, “We’re seeing a direct correlation between network performance and bottom-line success, and the data confirms that the conversation around connectivity has matured from an IT concern to a strategic business imperative, particularly here in the Asia Pacific region. With nearly a third (28.7%) of businesses in the region experiencing revenue losses exceeding US$5 million from network outages, the financial stakes are higher than ever – and it is no surprise that businesses are now prioritizing investment in networking and cybersecurity more than anything else. This strategic shift is critical for building the robust digital foundation needed to not only support large-scale data and AI initiatives but also to drive resilient, sustainable growth across the region.”

Having the right talent in place is also critical for building and maintaining the robust network and connectivity infrastructure businesses need to thrive. However, the research suggests this may be easier said than done.

Networking tops the list of areas where organizations in APAC struggle to find or retain skilled professionals (37.5%), closely followed by cybersecurity (31.6%). One in four (23%) APAC businesses say they plan to increase their reliance on external partners, such as vendors or managed service providers, to help bridge this skills gap.

MetaComp Calls for Faster, Fairer Settlement as New Study Reveals USD 6 Trillion SME Payment Opportunity Gap in Cross-Border Finance

SINGAPORE, Sept. 25, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — MetaComp Pte Ltd (MetaComp), a leading licensed cross-border FX and digital assets infrastructure provider headquartered in Singapore and regulated by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), today released its latest whitepaper, Cross-Border Payments for SMEs: Voices in ASEAN and the Rise of Stablecoins. The paper reveals systemic inefficiencies preventing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) from accessing efficient cross-border payment solutions.

Image: MetaComp StableX – Global Stablecoin Foreign Exchange Trading Network Based on Blockchain Technology
Image: MetaComp StableX – Global Stablecoin Foreign Exchange Trading Network Based on Blockchain Technology

Commissioned as part of MetaComp’s mission to simplify and streamline global fund flows, the research underscores how misaligned payment infrastructure disadvantages SMEs despite their central role in regional trade. The study also points to the growing role of stablecoins in global markets, noting that their flows already carry systemic financial implications and could be harnessed as practical settlement infrastructure for SMEs.

The report identifies five structural and systemic inefficiencies that are costing SMEs and reshaping global markets:

  • A US$6.2 trillion opportunity gap: The study identifies a disconnect between daily global FX trading volumes of more than US$7.5 trillion and blockchain-based cross-border payments and settlements that accounts for less than 5% annually. This imbalance represents a US$6.2 trillion opportunity gap, underscoring how far SMEs remain excluded from faster and more efficient settlement infrastructure.
  • Delays that erase value: Each day of settlement delay costs SMEs 0.6% to 2.1% of transaction value. SMEs profiled in the study reported lost contracts and revenue drops of up to 50% when funds failed to arrive on time.
  • SMEs pay up to 30 per cent more: Smaller firms routinely pay 15 to 30 per cent in fees on cross-border transactions, while large corporates negotiate preferential pricing. These disproportionate costs cut directly into SME margins and limit their ability to expand into new markets.
  • Stablecoins now move bond markets: Stablecoin flows are no longer marginal. They are already influencing US Treasury yields by 2 to 8 basis points, underscoring that new payment rails carry systemic implications for financial markets worldwide.

The study finds that timing costs often outweigh fees, with delayed settlements compounding into lost opportunities, performance degradation, and working capital stress. Scale barriers and fragmented Travel Rule regulations, from €0 in the EU to SGD 1,500 in Singapore and USD 3,000 in the US, further exclude SMEs from efficient participation.

Beyond these inefficiencies, the whitepaper frames the evolution of cross-border payments in three distinct stages:

  1. Stage One – Traditional (SWIFT): A USD-centric model with settlement delays of 2–7 days.
  2. Stage Two – Web 2.5 (Today): The transition phase that begins with the emergence of stablecoins. This is where MetaComp operates today — building hybrid infrastructure that blends regulatory compliance with blockchain-enabled programmability to deliver faster, fairer settlement.
  3. Stage Three – Sovereign Stablecoins (Future): A future ecosystem of national stablecoins exchanging directly powered by blockchain, which allows point-to-point direct exchange in a multi-polar world while maintaining regulatory oversight.

StableX is MetaComp’s flagship platform for Stage Two, enabling Web 2.5 settlement now while laying the foundation for Stage Three.

Author Perspectives

Dr. Bo Bai, Executive Chairman and Co-Founder of Alpha Ladder Group and Chairman of MetaComp shared, “The journey of cross-border payments is evolving in phases. Stage one was SWIFT era; stage two is today’s Web 2.5, where compliance meets programmability; and stage three will be sovereign stablecoins exchanging value directly. At MetaComp, we are already building toward this vision, with StableX as a critical step on that journey.”

Dr. Ben Charoenwong, Associate Professor of Finance, INSEAD said, “SMEs face challenges that go beyond transaction fees. Settlement delays erode working capital, regulatory fragmentation creates uncertainty, and volume-based barriers exclude growing businesses from efficient infrastructure. These structural issues must be addressed if SMEs are to participate fully in global trade.”

Tin Pei Ling, Co-President of MetaComp, said, “SMEs remain at the heart of ASEAN’s economies, yet too often they face barriers that slow growth and limit opportunity. What they need is confidence that payments will be fast, compliant, and reliable across borders. At MetaComp, our focus is on closing this gap with solutions such as StableX that combine innovation and regulation to deliver faster, fairer settlement.”

Eddie Hui, Co-President and COO of MetaComp, added, “Every day of delay erodes SME value. This is not about marginal cost savings, it is about survival and growth. Our study shows that adoption depends on business model realities, which is why the next generation of infrastructure must deliver instant settlement that SMEs can actually use in practice.”

StableX, developed and operated by MetaComp, bridges the gap between digital and traditional finance. Designed as an institutional-grade cross-border FX and liquidity routing platform, StableX delivers same-day (T+0) settlement across 30 currencies and six major stablecoins. By combining blockchain speed with a strong focus on compliance, it provides SMEs with faster, more reliable, and more transparent cross-border settlement.

The technology has been supported with more than $5 million in competitive Australian Research Council (ARC) grants, including prestigious ARC Industry Fellowships.

Further Testing

Earlier development showed the low-power, disposable Energy Ink prototype powering a skin patch with two 4 cm × 4 cm cells (32 cm² total area) at 2.5 µW/cm². The transfer fabrication program scaled this performance across thousands of cells.

In the transfer program, 2,051 cells out of 2,052 achieved 100% yield for both open-circuit voltage (>1.2 V) and short-circuit current compliance. A 7-day constant current test of 30 arrays (27 cells in each array) was then conducted at a capped 10 µA per cell to match the skin patch baseline.

All 30 arrays maintained continuous output, each sustaining 270 µA (0.27 mA) for the 7-day period, with minimum power density of 2.5 µW/cm². Testing was performed under semi-controlled indoor humidity of 55%–70% RH, consistent with printed electronics facility environments.

Development Pathway & Challenges

With reproducible fabrication of prototype Energy Ink cells outside the laboratory now achieved, detailed characterisation will be undertaken to establish a robust dataset. The next objectives are to:

  1. Engage international printed electronics centres — to test and develop Energy Ink alongside new materials, packaging, and electrodes. Focus on those with existing commercial relationships.
  2. Initiate discussions with end-user innovation hubs — global companies often run programs for innovative technologies such as battery-free power sources.
  3. Progress toward pilot programs — integrating Energy Ink into demonstrator products to generate data for potential commercial adoption.

Energy Ink remains at an early stage, with challenges ahead:

  • Performance and durability — maintaining stable output over longer periods.
  • Scalability — moving from prototype cells and sheets to larger or stacked formats.
  • Integration — combining effectively with circuits, sensors, and packaging.
  • Timelines — pilot programs may face delays and may not guarantee commercial adoption.
