HDBank increases ‘green’ credit to help popularise Vietnamese rice globally

HO CHI MINH CITY, VIETNAM – Media OutReach Newswire – 13 March 2024 – The HCM City Development Joint Stock Commercial Bank (HDBank) has hiked its loan limits and promoted lending for rice production and export value chains to enable Vietnamese rice to reach the world.

At the eighth congress of the Vietnam Farmers Union held in December 2023, HDBank launched its HDBank Rural Services, a specialised and superior financial solution integrating smart technology along with a preferential loan programme for agriculture and rural areas at 0 per cent interest. — Photo courtesy of HB Bank.

Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính issued Directive No 10/CT-TTg on March 2, 2024, on promoting the production, trading and export of rice in a sustainable, transparent and effective manner.

It requires the State Bank of Vietnam to direct banks to run credit programmes to support links between cooperatives and businesses for high-quality, low-carbon rice production, processing and consumption in the Cửu Long (Mekong) Delta region.

At the same time HDBank announced that, starting in March 2024, it would disburse loans worth nearly VND5 trillion (US$202 million) to agricultural services and food conglomerate Lộc Trời Group Joint Stock Company to help expand its value chains in the rice industry, including companies producing fertilisers, processing and exporting rice, distribution agents, and production households.

It focuses on meeting credit needs for buying and exporting rice from the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop in the Mekong Delta.

Phạm Quốc Thanh, general director of HDBank, said the loans are a “green” capital source for the development of agriculture and rural areas since they are associated with promoting and meeting quality standards in production and business and environmental responsibility, especially, creating products that meet the rigorous standards of developed markets around the world.

For example, just a month after the Việt Nam-EU Free Trade Agreement took effect on August 1, 2020, Lộc Trời Group exported Vietnamese jasmine rice to the EU.

By 2022 the company and its subsidiary, Lộc Trời Agricultural Products Joint Stock Company, successfully exported rice under its own brand, Cơm ViệtNam Rice, to Germany, France and the Netherlands.

Lộc Trời was also the first enterprise to put Vietnamese rice on the shelves of E.Leclerc, which has nearly 600 hypermarkets and more than 100 supermarkets across France.

In recent years Việt Nam’s rice industry has had outstanding success, reaching world levels and establishing its position.

The important thing is that the country has rice businesses that meet strict production standards, and promote green production and growth, Thanh said.

“These values create the foundation for achieving sustainable growth and records in term of both volume and value for rice exports in recent years.”

This direction by the rice industry, achieved arm in arm with commercial banks, has also been clearly defined in a programme called “Sustainable development of one million hectares of high-quality, low-carbon rice production associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030,” approved by PM Chính at the end of 2023.

The project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 10 per cent compared to traditional rice cultivation methods, and increase added value in the rice value chain by 40 per cent by 2030 and provide profit margins of more than 50 per cent for rice farmers.

New Yorkers treated to the US theatre debut of Modern Musical Dongpo: Life in Poems

MEISHAN, CHINA – Media OutReach Newswire – 12 March 2024 – In March 2024, an unprecedented visual feast will take place inside the Kennedy Center in DC and David H. Koch Theater in New York City’s Lincoln Center. There will be eight shows of the modern musical Dongpo: Life in Poems, a joint effort between the China Oriental Performing Arts Group Co., Ltd. and the MeiShan Song and Dance Theatre in this round of debut in the U.S. Using unique perspectives and innovative forms of expression, the production aims to showcase to the world the profundity and charms of traditional Chinese culture.

Modern Musical Dongpo: Life in Poems
Modern Musical Dongpo: Life in Poems

The creative core of Dongpo: Life in Poems revolves around the story of venerated luminary Su Shi (1037-1101). Also known by the name Su Dongpo, not only was he the pride of Meizhou (present-day Meishan of Sichuan Province), but also one of the most respected and accomplished writers and poets in Chinese history. Known for his positive and liberal spirit, and unwavering mentality, Su Dongpo became the only Chinese on the list of “Heroes of the Millennium” published by France’s Le Monde. Incorporating a diverse range of art forms from modern choreography and guqin music, to poetry, calligraphy, painting and carving, this production fully presents the inner world and emotions of Su Dongpo.

Internationally recognized producer, director, choreographer, painter and visual artist Shen Wei takes the helm on this production in multiple roles. He cleverly melds the words from 12 of Su Dongpo’s poems and proses into every dance movement and musical note, presenting an artistic dialogue that transcends time and space. After 20 months of meticulous polishing and 19 modifications, the final outcome has received critical acclaim. Shen Wei remarked: “The creative process of Dongpo: Life in Poems was an in-depth exploration of ancient culture, and at the same time an innovative experiment in using modern artistic methods to reiterate traditional Chinese culture.”

Stage photo of Dongpo: Life in Poems
Stage photo of Dongpo: Life in Poems

The stagecraft of Dongpo: Life in Poems is breathtaking. Rather than directly showing Su Dongpo’s personal life, the goal is to rely on artistic sophistication to foster a poetic ambience where “Dongpo can’t be seen but Dongpo is everywhere.” This kind of artistic expression that fuses traditional and contemporary elements, the East and the West, will bring to the American audience an artistic experience unlike any other.

The picture shows the Meishan Sansu Temple (meaning three Sus), which is the former residence of the famous literary masters, Su Xun and his two sons, Su Shi and Su Zhe of the Northern Song Dynasty in China. The temple houses tens of thousands of cultural relics and documents and was rated as a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2018, making it one of the best places to experience traditional Chinese culture

Furthermore, the production also represents a gathering of some of the top artists from both China and overseas. Other than Shen Wei, the team includes the likes of renowned Chinese-French composer Chen Qigang, national grade I scriptwriter Guo Changhong, lighting designer for the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games Xiao Lihe, and Deputy Director of the China Calligraphy Institute Yang Tao, among other heavyweights. Their expertise and experience have furnished this production with choreography, music, scripting, lighting and calligraphy of remarkable quality.

This round of debut in the U.S. has received tremendous support from the “Image China” brand. Since inception in 2009, “Image China” has been responsible for a large number of Chinese performances that have garnered widespread acclaim. This round of Dongpo: Life in Poems shows in the U.S. will be undertaken in cooperation with the American Dance Festival, and present to the American audience a modern musical masterpiece featuring Chinese aesthetics.

As the debut performances draw near, the Kennedy Center in DC and David H. Koch Theater in New York City’s Lincoln Center are making final preparations. No doubt the audiences have a lot to look forward to, and they expect to savor the charms and colors of traditional Chinese culture on stage.

It has been known that Dongpo: Life in Poems will also tour in France and the Hong Kong and Macao regions in 2024. As the birthplace of Su Dongpo, the city of Meishan will also capitalize on the opportunities of these tours by using both online and on-site methods to introduce to the world the city’s wonderful array of cultural resources, ecology, sceneries, gastronomy and intangible cultural heritages.

Jockey Club Multiple Pathways Initiative “CLAP-TECH Pathway” Celebrates 5th Anniversary

HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach Newswire – 12 March 2024 – The Jockey Club Multiple Pathways Initiative – CLAP-TECH Pathway (CLAP-TECH), funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, celebrated its fifth anniversary on Friday, 8 March. The ceremony was attended by over 130 industry partners and representatives from participating secondary schools, who shared how the programme has inspired students to pursue their dreams and make informed decisions about further studies and career development.

Themed “An Innovative Pathway to Empower the Future” (創新歷程 掌我夢想), the 5th Anniversary Celebration Ceremony of CLAP-TECH was amongst the highlights of the CLAP@JC Conference 2024. The ceremony brought together secondary school principals, teachers, secondary and post-secondary students, as well as business leaders from the information and communication technology (ICT) and creative media industries. They shared how CLAP-TECH equips students with both hard and soft skills, nurturing “New Collar” talent to meet ever-changing market needs. The event also featured a networking session for students and corporate representatives.

The ceremony was joined by distinguished guests including Mr. Kasper Ng, Principal Assistant Secretary (Further Education), at the Education Bureau; Ms. Winnie Ying, Head of Charities (Youth Development & Poverty Alleviation) at The Hong Kong Jockey Club; Dr. Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) at Hong Kong Baptist University; and Prof. Ronald Chung, Dean of the School of Continuing Education at Hong Kong Baptist University.

As Hong Kong’s first through-train VPET pathway, CLAP-TECH’s “3+2” multiple entry and exit pathways combine the career development component of CLAP@JC and elements from the P-TECH initiative pioneered by IBM in 2011. Funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, CLAP-TECH offers two applied learning courses in secondary schools which integrate career and life development into two higher diploma programmes. Through a tripartite collaboration model between Hong Kong Baptist University, industry partners and secondary schools, CLAP-TECH equips students with the necessary soft and hard skills for the workplace and nurtures “New Collar” talent for the ICT and creative media industries.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Andrew Ho, Director of CLAP-TECH Centre, said, “With the government promoting diversified development for young people, CLAP-TECH is the first in Hong Kong to integrate a VPET pathway that spans both mainstream secondary and post-secondary education. This initiative connects key stakeholders and leverages an innovative, tripartite relationship among HKBU, industry partners, and secondary schools to enhance the VPET landscape. We sincerely appreciate the support from the Education Bureau and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, as well as the tremendous support from industry partners and supporting organisations in providing a variety of learning experiences to the students. These experiences are integral in inspiring the students to make well-informed plans for further studies and career development based on their personal interests and strengths.”

Five years into the CLAP-TECH Pathway: industry partner networks have expanded tenfold, with over 90% of graduates reporting greater clarity about their future

Over the past five years, CLAP-TECH has gained substantial support from nearly 40 industry partners and supporting organisations, a more than tenfold increase. These partners have collectively hosted over 1,500 industry exposures for CLAP-TECH students, while more than 170 mentors from various companies and organisations have continued to coach students through the career mentorship programme.

More than 1,000 students from over 90 secondary schools have participated in CLAP-TECH so far, with over 90% of CLAP-TECH graduates saying they have successfully identified their interests and capabilities, enabling them to make informed decisions about their future study and career paths. Among the graduates of the first and second cohorts of the Applied Learning Course in Tech Basics, offered by the School of Continuing Education of Hong Kong Baptist University, nearly half opted for IT or engineering-related career paths after the HKDSE, proving that exposing students to vocational and professional education during their secondary school years can effectively prepare them for future academic pursuits and career development.

To celebrate its 5th Anniversary, CLAP-TECH will be joined by graduates of the third cohort of the Applied Learning Course ─ Tech Basics, first cohort of the Applied Learning Course ─ Multimedia Storytelling[1], and the first cohort of the Higher Diploma in Data Science[2]. The new Higher Diploma in Art Tech Design[3] will also be launched this September, equipping students with the necessary knowledge of technology, culture and art, and cultivating a new generation of creative talent.
