Iran Conflict Disrupts Airspace, Southeast Asian Flights Continue

Middle East escalation disrupts airspace, Thailand prepares evacuations, Southeast Asian airlines continue operations, while Laos issues no official statement.

A sudden military escalation in the Middle East erupted over the weekend, triggering immediate airspace closures over Iran and parts of the Gulf, while governments across the region began preparing evacuation plans. Despite the escalation, most Southeast Asian airlines continue to operate normally.

Explosions struck Tehran in the early hours of 28 February after the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes on Iranian military and nuclear-related facilities.

By Sunday morning, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had been confirmed dead following the strikes, marking a dramatic turning point in the conflict.

Iran responded with missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and US facilities across several countries in the region. In response to the widening confrontation, multiple Middle Eastern states closed or restricted their airspace, disrupting major aviation corridors linking Europe and Asia.

Southeast Asian Flights Continue

Despite the turmoil, several Southeast Asian carriers report limited impact on their European routes.

Vietnam Airlines confirmed its flights to Europe continue to operate as scheduled, as the carrier does not route through Israeli or Iranian airspace. Other Vietnamese airlines, including Vietjet Air and Bamboo Airways, do not operate European services and have reported no disruption.

Thai Airways also stated that its European flights remain largely unaffected. The airline has rerouted certain services to avoid conflict zones, adding marginal flight time, but operations continue.

The main disruption in Southeast Asia has come through Middle Eastern carriers.

Qatar Airways temporarily suspended flights between Vietnam and Doha from 28 February to 2 March, while Emirates halted services to and from Dubai. Vietnamese authorities reported thousands of passengers affected by cancellations and delays.

Thailand Prepares, Laos Yet to Comment

Thailand faces a more immediate challenge on the ground.

The Thai Labour Ministry confirmed that approximately 7,700 Thai nationals are registered in Iran. However, according to the Thai Embassy in Tehran, only 29 have requested immediate repatriation.

The ministry estimates there are around 110,000 Thai nationals across the Middle East, including 65,000 in Israel, over 20,000 in the United Arab Emirates, and smaller communities in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Egypt, Oman, Kuwait, Jordan, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Lebanon, and Syria.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul placed authorities on maximum readiness, with the Royal Thai Air Force preparing aircraft for possible evacuation missions. Thailand’s Foreign Ministry has advised its citizens in Iran to remain calm, stay indoors, and maintain contact with embassy and consular hotlines.

In contrast, Laos has not issued an official public statement as of 2 March regarding its nationals in Iran.

There is no publicly available data on the number of Lao citizens residing in the country. International migration statistics suggest the Lao community in Iran is small, likely numbering fewer than 1,000 people.

Without a resident embassy in Tehran, Lao nationals may need to rely on third-country diplomatic missions or overland exit routes should the situation deteriorate.

Meanwhile, Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Vietnamese nationals in Iran and Israel remain safe. Hanoi has advised its citizens to avoid travel to affected areas and to stay in close contact with representative missions.

Regional Impact

The conflict has forced airspace closures across parts of Iran, Iraq, Israel, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates, affecting some of the world’s busiest aviation corridors between Europe and Asia.

For now, Southeast Asian national carriers continue to operate with minimal disruption. However, governments across the region remain on alert as the conflict unfolds and evacuation contingencies remain in place.

Nina Hotel Island South Presents a New Look as an Urban Oasis

Unveiling a transformed lobby, refreshed guestrooms, and new Nina Communal

HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach Newswire – 2 March 2026 – Nina Hospitality, the hospitality arm of Chinachem Group, announces the launch of a major renovation at Nina Hotel Island South, which first opened in 2010. The project redefines the property as an urban oasis on Hong Kong Island’s south side, with proximity to all of the island’s attractions, where comfort meets value. Located five minutes from Wong Chuk Hang Station and moments from Ocean Park and Aberdeen, the hotel now presents a transformed lobby alongside 432 newly refreshed guestrooms and Nina Communal, a vibrant communal lounge with bar and pantry facilities designed for families, business travellers and leisure visitors.

Nina Hotel Island South Presents a New Look as an Urban Oasis

“The over-HK$120-million renovation marks a significant milestone in our mission to deliver great value, comfort and a contemporary lifestyle experience for every guest,” said Simon Manning, Managing Director of Nina Hospitality. “Spaces have been designed to feel warm, flexible and family-friendly while offering convenient connections to Hong Kong Island’s attractions.”

Inspired by the Natural Landscape of Hong Kong Island’s South Side

Designed by LAUD Limited, the renovation draws inspiration from the natural landscape of Hong Kong Island’s south side, articulating a refined design language that is both grounded and elegant. The reimagined lobby combines sophistication with warmth, using natural wood, marble accents and soft lighting in an open layout that connects reception, lounge and communal areas. Curated seating zones provide comfort for families, business travellers and groups, transforming the lobby into both a welcoming gateway and a social hub.

Guestrooms continue this design narrative with open layouts that invite natural light into the space. Natural oak introduces warmth and tactile richness, while an ivory-toned palette expands spatial perception. Accents of safari brown leather and ivy green upholstery establish a contemporary yet natural harmony. Each element is carefully curated to evoke a calm, inviting retreat where interior and environment converge.

Nina Communal with Bar: A Vibrant Social Hub

Central to the enhanced guest experience is Nina Communal, unveiled as part of the newly reimagined lobby. As the Group’s signature brand offering — already established at Nina Hotel Tsuen Wan West and Nina Hotel Kowloon East — the Island South edition marks the third in the series, each with its own unique proposition. Spanning approximately 260 sqm, it serves as a communal lounge where guests can cook, eat, drink, socialise, work and play. The space features a pantry and a stylish bar that offers a relaxed setting for drinks and conversations, making it an ideal spot to unwind or gather with friends. It also offers travellers a modern space to work, meet, and network.

Inspired by urban energy, the lounge offers a cosy yet refined setting with thoughtfully curated seating arrangements. It creates a contemporary and elegant atmosphere, catering not only to solo travellers, families and groups, but also appealing long‑stay guests who value flexibility, comfort and community. Beyond daily use, Nina Communal also provides opportunities for social events and placemaking, reinforcing its role as a vibrant hub that connects people and enriches the neighbourhood experience.

An Ideal Accommodation for All Visitors

The hotel features 432 rooms and suites, ranging from 30 to 81 square metres. Accommodations include 6 rooms with private balconies, 13 family rooms accommodating up to five guests, and 4 signature balcony suites on the top floor with stunning southside views. The hotel is already welcoming guests, with newly renovated family rooms and suites scheduled for launch in Q3 2026.

Guests can enjoy Southeast Asian flavours at I-O-N, the hotel’s buffet restaurant. Business needs are supported by three meeting rooms, while leisure facilities include a well-equipped gym with 24-hour access and an outdoor pool. These amenities complement the communal lounge and support both social and business occasions, reinforcing the hotel’s position as a convenient base for family getaways, business trips and city escapes.

Discover the New Nina

To mark this new chapter, a special room package is available. The “Discover the New Nina” offer includes a 15% discount on the Best Available Rate, daily breakfast for two persons at the I-O-N, and complimentary access to the new communal lounge. EASY GOLD Wins Two Awards at Lao MSME Expo

EASY GOLD, Laos’ first digital gold investment platform, received two major awards at the Lao MSME Expo held at ITECC Mall in Vientiane Capital from 25 February to 1 March.

The annual expo recognizes small and medium-sized enterprises for their contributions to socio-economic development. This year, EASY GOLD earned the Lao MSME Outstanding Award in the Outstanding MSME Supporter category and the MSMEs Sustainability Excellence Award in the Innovation and Technology category.

The awards were presented by the Director General of the Department of SME Promotion under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce and the Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce.

Chief Executive Officer Chanthavong Phamisith accepted the awards on behalf of the company, describing the recognition as a milestone in the platform’s development.

“EASY GOLD’s growth from a small gold store to becoming one of the country’s leading gold investment applications has not been easy,” he said. “We are driven by a strong determination to introduce innovation into the Lao gold market, and to foster a continuously growing Lao digital economy.”

The platform allows users to begin investing in gold with a minimum of LAK 100,000, aiming to lower traditional barriers to gold ownership. By digitizing transactions, the company seeks to expand access to gold investment for wage earners, small business owners, students, and young professionals.

The recent awards follow earlier international recognition, including a Start-up Award from the Asian-Oceanian Computing Industry Organization last year.

EASY GOLD operates as a subsidiary of the Khamphouvong Group and continues to position itself within Laos’ growing digital finance sector, with plans to expand access to long-term investment options in the future.
