Twenty-nine (29) people were killed in road accidents nationwide between 29 Dec 2017 and 2 Jan 2018.
According to the Traffic Police Department of the Ministry of Public Security, 179 accidents were recorded across the country. The accidents also resulted in 280 people injured and 332 vehicles damaged.
Thirty-one (31) accidents were reported in Vientiane Capital, 24 in Savannakhet, 20 in Oudomxay, 20 in Champassak, 19 in Vientiane, and 12 in Sayaboury.
Five (5) deaths were reported in Oudomxay, 4 in Sayaboury, 4 in Champassak, 2 in Vientiane Capital, 2 in Bolikhamxay, and 2 in Xekong.
The number of deaths increased by more than 60% from the same period last year. The majority of road accidents were directly related to driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless speed driving and blatant disregard for traffic regulations.
