The President of Laos will pay a state visit to China from 29 November to 1 December in response to an invitation from the Chinese President, Xi Jinping.

President Thongloun Sisoulith will visit China for the first time as President of Laos with his wife and other officials. The purpose of the visit is to further strengthen Laos and China’s friendly relations and comprehensive cooperation.

He would be the third ASEAN head of state to visit China this year, after Indonesian President Joko Widodo in July and Vietnamese Communist Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong in October, according to South China Morning Post.

Mr. Thongloun Sisoulith visited China officially as the Prime Minister at the behest of their Prime Minister Li Keqiang in 2020.

President Xi Jinping traveled to Laos in 2017 to meet with the government in the hopes of advancing several major developments that would benefit both nations.

In December of last year, the two presidents also presided over the official opening ceremony of the Laos-China Railway which has soon become one of the most popular forms of transportation for people traveling to Northern Laos.

Laos and China first established diplomatic relations on 25 April 1961.
