According to the traffic department report, 702 road accidents took place in April, resulting in 90 fatalities.
Compared to March, the number of accidents in April increased by 85. The Pi Mai Lao festival alone saw 194 accidents during the three-day celebrations of the Lao New Year.
In addition to the fatalities, the accidents also injured 1,173 people, an increase of 199 from the previous month. At 104, Vientiane Capital recorded the highest number of accidents, resulting in 15 deaths.
Other provinces with a significant number of accidents included Champasack with 96, Savannakhet with 80, Vientiane Province with 68, Luang Prabang with 56, and Bolikhamxay with 41.
The report identified the key causes of the accidents to be driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, not following traffic signs, sudden changes in vehicle direction, poor conditions of vehicles, and speeding.
The total damage value of the accidents in April is estimated at around LAK 11,671 million (about USD 670088.73).
