The Vientiane City Office for Management and Services (VCOMS) has issued a notice informing the public regarding the closure and renovation of Patuxay Monument in Vientiane Capital from 1 June.

The move comes after Patuxay monument was criticized for being too disorderly after large numbers of vendors began setting up stalls at the entrance.

According to the notice, the renovations are intended to make the monument more attractive and to make the park surrounding it a place for recreation, exercise, and sightseeing ahead of the 2024 ASEAN Summit.

The notice says, “We would like to inform the public that some areas of the Patuxay Monument will be closed for renovations. This will take place as part of preparations for Laos hosting the 2024 ASEAN Summit, and is expected to be complete by August.”

The notice continued by saying, “We understand that the renovations will cause some inconvenience, so we would like to apologize in advance.”
