Lao Brewery Company Emerges as Laos’ Top Taxpayer in 2024

This Week

The Lao Brewery Company Ltd. (LBC) cemented its position as Laos’ largest taxpayer in 2024, contributing over LAK 5.1 trillion (USD 240 million) in taxes. This marks a 32 percent increase compared to the previous year.

Henrik Juel Andersen, Managing Director of LBC, emphasized the company’s dedication to promoting the nation’s development.

“As a company with an identity deeply intertwined with the nation, LBC is fully committed to supporting the country’s growth by paying all our taxes,” he stated.

According to Andersen, LBC exported Beerlao worth over USD 13 million to nearly 20 countries. He noted that the growing international popularity of Beerlao has boosted foreign currency inflows, thereby supporting the Lao Kip currency.

Andersen also pointed out LBC’s commitment to sustainable growth through the Carlsberg Group’s “Sail 27” vision. The company is focused on enhancing product quality, elevating innovation, driving environmental stewardship, and engaging in community development to benefit the people of Laos.

Despite these achievements, challenges remain. Kissana Vongsay, Chairman of LBC’s Board, expressed concern over the rising issue of beer smuggling from neighboring countries, particularly Vietnam. He noted that the illegal import of untaxed beers significantly impacts government revenue, reducing funds available for public services and development projects.

“This practice harms the local economy across the value chain – from farmers and manufacturers to legal traders and F&B businesses,” Vongsay stated, adding that smuggled products may include counterfeit items that pose health risks to consumers.

Since 2022, the company has spent over LAK 10 billion (USD 460,595) on projects related to environmental sustainability, education, disaster relief, healthcare, and community aid. These efforts further demonstrate LBC’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of Lao communities.
