The double-track railway project between Lop Buri and Pak Nam Pho in Thailand is set to launch in mid-2025.
This major infrastructure project, part of the broader Thailand’s transportation plan, carries an investment of THB 24,842.44 million (approximately USD 738.2 million), making this double-track railway the largest urban rail transit project in Thailand, according to the country’s Department of Rail Transport.
Once operational in mid-2025, this project will reduce travel time, enhance safety by eliminating railway crossings, and also to boost freight and passenger connectivity to northern Thailand
The Lopburi – Pak Nam Pho Double-Track Railway Project is a 148 km railway upgrade to make train travel faster and safer.
The project is divided into three key sections.
The first section, stretching 32 kilometers, includes Thailand’s longest elevated railway, designed to avoid damaging Lopburi’s historic sites.
This section also introduces the new Lopburi 2 Station, aiming to ease congestion and improve connectivity.
The second section, covering 116 kilometers, is built entirely on the ground. It will add six new stations and upgrade 11 existing ones, significantly improving service and accessibility for commuters.
The final part of the project focuses on the modernization of signaling and safety systems, which are now more than halfway complete at 54.88 percent.
To date, the construction of the station building structure, platforms, and tracks have been completed. A test run using an electronic token system combined with colored light signals is scheduled for May 2025, ensuring smooth operations before the official launch.
Lop Buri 2 Station, part of Thailand’s railway expansion, is an elevated structure with three floors: the ground level, the ticket sales floor, and the platform floor. This station will serve long-distance trains, including special express, express, rapid, and freight services.
Meanwhile, the original Lop Buri Station will remain operational, serving ordinary, suburban, and local trains to meet the needs of residents in Lop Buri Province.
At the southern end of the dual-track railway, Pak Nam Pho Station has been completely rebuilt. The new station, a conservation station, preserves the original architectural style of the old station while modernizing the building to better accommodate passengers.
