On 18 January, China officially handed over a project to support the construction of a battalion camp to the Lao People’s Army (LPA), officials said.
The new project, located in northern Laos’ Phongsaly Province, includes 28 buildings, comprising a large meeting hall, library, offices, dormitories, canteen, and other facilities, along with essential infrastructure for water, electricity, fire safety, and work equipment.
Officials said these facilities will ensure that officers and soldiers can live and operate effectively at the camp.
Khamlieng Outhakaisone, Lao Minister of Defense, expressed gratitude to China, saying the project strengthens the capabilities and living conditions of Lao soldiers and reinforces bilateral military cooperation.
He reaffirmed that Laos will continue close collaboration with China, following the principles of “good neighbors, good friends, good partners, and good collaborators.”
Fang Hong, Chinese Ambassador to Laos, said the project is a gift to mark the 65th anniversary of China-Laos diplomatic relations and the 77th anniversary of LPA.
The handover is part of broader Laos-China military cooperation, including joint exercises, officer exchanges, border defense visits, and training programs aimed at enhancing Laos’ defense capacity and promoting regional peace and stability.
Echoing this commitment from Beijing, Zhang Xiaogang, spokesman for China’s Ministry of National Defense, said at a Beijing press briefing on 16 January that China will continue to deepen defense cooperation with Laos in 2026.
