Laos Braces for Extreme Heat During New Year Celebrations

This Week

Laos is on alert for extreme hot weather during the Lao New Year celebrations, with some areas expected to reach 43 degrees Celsius, according to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.

The warning covers the period from 10 to 16 April, coinciding directly with Pi Mai Lao, with authorities cautioning that dangerously high temperatures will be felt nationwide over several consecutive days.

The most severe conditions are forecast for the central provinces, where Vientiane, Bolikhamxay, Khammouane, and Savannakhet are all expected to reach the 43-degree-Celsius peak. Vientiane Capital and northern provinces, including Luang Namtha, Oudomxay, Bokeo, Luang Prabang, and Xayabouly, are forecast to climb to 42 degrees Celsius.

Despite the heat, conditions will not be dry all across the country.

Some areas can expect moderate to heavy rainfall, strong thunderstorms, hailstorms, and powerful winds, making it essential for residents to remain alert to rapidly shifting weather throughout the period.

On the health front, officials are urging the public to avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours, citing serious heatstroke risk.

The Ministry of Education and Sports has advised schools to avoid all outdoor activities for students until the extreme heat subsides, with particular concern raised for the elderly and young children.

Authorities also caution that prolonged extreme temperatures may trigger fires and electrical short circuits.
