Khammouane Province Orders Closure of Internet Cafes to Tackle Rising Illegal Gambling

This Week

Starting by 15 July, all internet cafes and online gambling businesses in Khammouane Province must be shut down, according to a directive issued on 1 July aimed at addressing the growing challenges linked to illegal gambling activities.

The Department of the Khammouane Provincial Internet Management Committee announced the notice after receiving reports of increased illegal online gambling activities.

In order to keep their businesses going and attract more users, many internet shops began offering gambling services, which have become increasingly popular particularly among teenagers and students, the notice highlighted.

To tackle the issue, the provincial authorities have ordered the closure of all internet cafes. Those who violate the directive will face fines of up to LAK 10 million (approximately USD 464). Additionally, related property, including computers, and other equipment used in these operations, will be confiscated.

The directive also ordered several provincial departments, including the Industry and Commerce Department, to cease issuing new licenses or business approvals for internet cafes. Furthermore, the government will revoke existing business registration certificates of such establishments across the province.

To strengthen enforcement, the provincial authorities have encouraged both residents and civil servants to report illegal internet cafes.
