Lao authorities are reviewing a proposed increase to the national minimum wage, with figures under discussion reaching up to LAK 4.1 million (USD 190) per month.
The National Labor Committee met on 19 March in Vientiane to negotiate adjustments in response to rising living costs and economic pressures.
The current minimum wage stands at LAK 2.5 million (USD 116), following an increase from LAK 1.6 million (USD 75) in October 2024. However, inflation has continued to climb, reaching 6.2 percent in February, adding pressure on household expenses.
Different Proposals Under Review
The parties presented differing proposals during the meeting.
The government proposed raising the base wage to LAK 2.7 million (USD 125), along with a cost-of-living allowance that would bring the total to about LAK 3.6 million (USD 167). The proposal is based on Consumer Price Index data, which has more than doubled since 2018.
Labor representatives pushed for a higher figure of LAK 4.1 million (USD 190), citing the need to improve workers’ living standards.
Meanwhile, employer representatives proposed a more moderate increase to LAK 2.8 million (USD 131), aiming to balance wage growth with business sustainability.
The proposals will be submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office for final consideration.
Rising Costs Drive Urgency
The wage review comes as living costs continue to rise across Laos.
Fuel prices have surged in recent weeks, with regular gasoline increasing from LAK 21,990 (USD 1.02) in mid-February to LAK 40,500 (USD 1.90) in March. Diesel prices have also nearly doubled over the same period.
Higher costs for electricity, water, and housing have added further pressure, with energy-related expenses rising more than 24 percent year-on-year.
Everyday expenses, including healthcare, education, and food services, have also increased, placing additional strain on household budgets.
Officials say the wage adjustment is being considered as part of broader efforts to help workers cope with rising costs while maintaining economic stability.
