Traditional Lao crafts, food, music and other forms of cultural knowledge will take center stage at a five-day exhibition in Vientiane next month, bringing artisans, communities, businesses and visitors together to explore how traditional knowledge can find a place in modern life.
The “Value of Lao Wisdom” exhibition will run from 9 to 13 September at the Lao-ITECC Exhibition Center, with free admission.
Organizers describe Lao Wisdom as more than objects inherited from previous generations. It includes the knowledge, skills, experience and ways of thinking that Lao communities have developed and passed down over generations.
That knowledge can be found in traditional weaving and natural dyeing, wood carving, silver and gold jewelry, pottery, cooking, herbal practices, music, dance, rituals, language and literature, as well as traditional ways of living in harmony with nature.
The exhibition will showcase how these traditions continue to shape Lao identity while also creating opportunities for artisans and communities to connect with modern consumers and markets.
Visitors will be able to buy products directly from artisans and communities, view traditional masterpieces and take part in workshops led by craftspeople. The event will also feature Lao fashion, music, performances, food, coffee, tea and herbal products.
Business-matching activities will give producers an opportunity to meet potential buyers and business partners, linking traditional crafts and local production with wider commercial opportunities.
Organizers say the exhibition aims to connect the past with the present, artisans with consumers, communities with markets, and traditional knowledge with modern technology and design.
For visitors, the event offers a chance to experience Lao culture through the people who continue to practice and develop it.
The “Value of Lao Wisdom” exhibition will take place from 9–13 September at the Lao-ITECC Exhibition Center, Old Building. Admission is free.
