Officials from Laos and Thailand are to set up a working committee to discuss regulations regarding the reopening of land borders.
The subject was broached at a recent meeting on the development of basic infrastructure and improvement of connectivity and transportation between the two countries.
An agreement was signed at the 22nd Thai-Lao Joint Commission meeting held on Wednesday and Thursday in Bangkok. The meeting was co-chaired by Lao Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Saleumxay Kommasith, and his Thai counterpart, Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai.
The meeting was held under the theme, “Towards a Resilient and Sustainable Recovery,” and served as an opportunity for both sides to follow up on progress made in various areas of cooperation, according to Bangkok Post.
Both countries have also agreed to set up a working committee to discuss regulations regarding the reopening of land borders between Laos and Thailand.
“At the initial stage it would be a one-day trip at the border crossing between Nong Khai, Udon Thani, and Vientiane in Laos,” said Thai Director-General of the Department of East Asian Affairs.
“This will stimulate cross-border trade between our nations.”
She said Laos and Thailand had agreed to forward on the development of public infrastructure including moving forward with the fifth Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge linking Bueng Kan in Thailand with Bolikhamxay in Laos, and a sixth bridge connecting Ubon Ratchathani in Thailand with Salavan in Laos.
