Laos Among Weakest Passports in New Global Ranking

This Week

Laos has been ranked 93rd on a list of the world’s most powerful passports, up slightly from last year’s ranking.

According to the Henley Passport Index, an authoritative ranking of all the world’s passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa, Japan has ranked first as the world’s most powerful passport, with visa-free access to 193 countries, for the fifth consecutive year.

Singapore and South Korea issue the second most powerful passports in the world where their citizens can have visa-free entry to 192 countries. Germany and Spain are tied for the number three position, enabling travelers from the two European nations to visit 190 countries without having a visa at hand.

Laos, on the other hand, ranks 93rd on the list with visa-free access available at only 50 destinations.

Thailand alongside Belarus ranked 68 on the list, giving it access to 78 destinations. Cambodia and Vietnam ranked 89th and 88th on the list respectively with visa-free entry to 54 countries allowed for the former and 55 countries for the latter.

Afghanistan ranked lowest on the list of 199 countries, with its citizens being able to visit just 27 countries without requiring a visa in advance.

Laos had ranked 95 on the Henley Passport Index last year, and Lao passport holders had access to 51 nations without visas.
