According to a recent conference held by the Ministry of Energy and Mines, the construction of the Luang Prabang hydropower project is expected to be completed by 2030, ten years after its inception in 2020.
During the meeting, the Deputy Director of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Mr. Daophet Phothivanh stated that the Luang Prabang hydropower will be a run-off river project with a concrete gravity dam that has a height of 79 meters.
Mr. Daophet added that no water harvesting will take place at the dam and that the water input and outflow will be balanced. Seven turbines will contribute to generating a total power of 1.460 MW, with each turbine generating 200MW worth of electricity. According to estimates, the dam’s annual output will be around 6,854 GWh.
He also said the project is being carried out in collaboration with four companies: Petro Vietnam Power (Vietnam), PT (Laos), and CH. Karnchang (Thailand), and CK Power (Thailand) and power projects like this contribute towards the socio-economic development of the country.
So far, the Luang Prabang Hydropower project has impacted the lives of residents in the provinces of Luang Prabang, Xayaboury, and Oudomxay, totaling 1,298 families and 6,562 people. These residents will be soon relocated to new ministry-provided housing.
