Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone Attends 42nd ASEAN Summit

Prime Minister Sonexay Siphadone led the Lao delegation at the 42nd ASEAN Summit in Indonesia and participated in other related meetings on 9-11 May.

During the 42nd plenary meeting, ASEAN members were pleased with the progress on the implementation of the ASEAN 2025 Community Vision, as well as the continued cooperation between the ASEAN members.

The leaders discussed the post-ASEAN 2023 Community Vision plans and the importance of maintaining a healthy relationship between the bloc members and countries outside it. The meeting also reiterated the importance of maintaining the centrality of ASEAN in the regional structure through cooperation in the mechanisms established by ASEAN.

During the summit, which was held under the chairmanship of Indonesia under the slogan “ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth”, the leaders also met with four related organizations of ASEAN. The ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, ASEAN youth representatives, ASEAN Business Advisory Council, and the high-level task force on the vision of the ASEAN community after 2025.

The leaders in attendance expressed their appreciation towards all four organizations, hoping for them to be economically strong and contribute towards the advancements of ASEAN, be able to cope with various challenges, as well as sculpt ASEAN as a center of economic growth in the region.

Pasaxon reported that on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit, Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone also held bilateral meetings with the President of Indonesia, Incumbent Joko Widodo, the Prime Minister of Timor Leste, Taur Matan Ruak, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Vietnam, Pham Minh Chinh, the President of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and the Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong to continue promoting mutual cooperation between Laos and its neighbors.
