SINGAPORE – Media OutReach – 20 July 2023 – Recent studies by specialist recruiters Michael Page reveals significant shifts in Singapore’s job market, with 2 in 5 individuals actively seeking new employment and 9 in 10 people who started a new job in the past year remaining open to fresh opportunities.
According to the Michael Page Singapore Talent Trends 2023 report titled “The Invisible Revolution”, in the wake of an increasingly fluid and dynamic work environment, the employment landscape continues to evolve at an unprecedented pace, particularly since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was found that 1 in 2 Singaporeans have switched roles since the pandemic began, demonstrating both the resilience and adaptability of our nation’s workforce.
Further illustrating this trend, Nilay Khandelwal, Managing Director of Michael Page Singapore says, “Despite 50% of respondents expressing job satisfaction and 69% satisfied with their salary, an astounding 92% are open to new opportunities. This paradox indicates a fundamental reset of people’s relationship with their jobs and the value they attach to them.”
The study suggests that companies must rethink their hiring models. With even ‘happy’ staff now open to being tempted away with the promise of better pay, flexibility, and conditions, employment strategies will need to be continuous, rather than on-demand, to keep up.
The report emphasizes the importance of a clearly articulated employee value proposition (EVP). This should go beyond pay and flexibility and get to the nub of the issue with attracting and retaining talent.
Interestingly, the survey also unveiled that 59% of Singaporean employees are more likely to start a job search when they perceive the economic environment as worsening. This finding underscores the importance of economic stability in job satisfaction and employee retention.
These figures reflect a transformative shift in the Singaporean workforce, driven by a blend of personal ambition, economic uncertainty, and the evolving job market. Employers need to be cognizant of these changing dynamics and strive to create workplace environments that foster career growth, job satisfaction, and financial stability for their employees.
Nicholas Kirk, CEO at PageGroup, said, “The trends in Singapore mirror the sentiment of the global talent market – every region has seen a transformative change across all age groups, markets, and industries.
“These are not fleeting trends or reactionary responses to a period of turbulence. Rather, they are reshaping the workplace in a way that will subtly yet fundamentally change the way businesses attract and retain their talent.”
While these revelations may be surprising to some, our study emphasises a long-term transformation of the employment market as people re-evaluate the role of work in their lives. This holds great significance for employers in Singapore, necessitating a re-examination of retention expectations and adopting flexible resourcing solutions in addition to traditional permanent rolesHashtag: #MichaelPage #TalentTrends2023 #InvisibleRevolution

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – Media OutReach – 20 July 2023 – The “Great Resignation” phenomenon is far from over, according to the latest Talent Trends 2023 report, which presents a comprehensive analysis of the Australian job market. The report, commissioned by Michael Page Australia, is based on responses from nearly 70,000 professionals worldwide, making it the most extensive talent study of its kind.
The study reveals a significant shift in employee attitudes and motivations, affecting every age group, country, and industry. It indicates that the change we see today is here to stay, and there’s no returning to the pre-pandemic way of doing things. Even satisfied workers are willing to move on to better opportunities, and job loyalty has lost its lustre.
The report shows that the rate of resignation increased during the period attributed as the Great Resignation, and in 2022, this number more than doubled. With 52% of the workforce being “active job seekers” this year, along with the increasing volatility of the global economy, this trend is expected to continue throughout 2023.
The study also reveals that 90% of Australian talent is open to new opportunities in 2023, a trend that spans across various job functions, seniority levels, and age groups. This is not an isolated event, but a universal movement, reflecting a renewed sense of personal value and a shift in what individuals want to achieve in their own lives.
The report suggests that employers must adapt to this new reality by focusing on fundamental building blocks such as salary, career progression, talent development, and flexibility. These are critical for developing sustainable and successful talent strategies.
“We view these changes as an ‘Invisible Revolution’ that carries significant implications for employers,” says Sharmini Wainwright, Senior Managing Director of PageGroup. “Our study sheds light on a long-term transformation of the employment market, as people reconsider the role of work in their lives following the pandemic disruption.”
David George, Senior Managing Director of PageGroup, adds, “The study also highlights the top reasons for resignation. A significant 20% of respondents cited work-life balance and company culture as the main factors, while 16% are looking for career progression and promotion, and another 16% are seeking a big change in career, role, or industry.”
Nicholas Kirk, CEO at PageGroup, said, “The trends in Australia mirror the sentiment of the global talent market – every region has seen a transformative change across all age groups, markets, and industries.
“These are not fleeting trends or reactionary responses to a period of turbulence. Rather, they are reshaping the workplace in a way that will subtly yet fundamentally change the way businesses attract and retain their talent.”
Given the workforce’s openness to change, Australian employers must rethink retention strategies, focusing on improved work environments, growth opportunities, and competitive compensation to retain talent.
Raising awareness of sustainable fashion by demonstrating the feasibility towards low impact production
HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach – 20 July 2023–The Mills Fabrica and CHAT (Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile), – The Mills’ innovation arm and art centre, today jointly launch the “SEED TO TECHSTYLE” furoshiki – now available for sale.
Furoshiki, a traditional Japanese wrapping cloth used to transport goods, was chosen as a medium to demonstrate consciously-grown fiber, textiles, and low impact production methods. Its goal is to raise awareness and showcase the feasibility of sustainable fashion.
“Seed” – from which the fibers were grown, to “techstyle” – the intersection between technology and lifestyle, the making of the furoshiki is a collaborative effort from mission-aligned ecosystem partners across the globe brought together by The Mills Fabrica and CHAT. They include: integrative design studio Pop & Zebra, supplier of TENCEL™ fibers Lenzing Group, textile innovation and solutions provider NTX®, and local studio and social enterprise RHYS.
SEED TO TECHSTYLE – minimal environmental impact from the outset
Today, synthetic fibers represent 65% of global fiber production, of which 56% of fibers produced are derived from fossil fuels, according to Textile Exchange’s 2022 report. The Environmental Protection Department also revealed that Hong Kong generates an average of 392 tonnes of textile waste per day into our landfill. Along with the rising trend of fast fashion, the textile and apparel industry is a significant contributor to climate change, emitting up to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, as outlined in The Mills Fabrica’s 2022 Impact Report.
Riding on the momentum of five years of accelerating innovation in techstyle and agrifood tech, The Mills Fabrica and CHAT hopes to use the “SEED TO TECHSTYLE” furoshiki – which is manufactured by cutting-edge textile technology that greatly reduces impact on the environment – as a means to urge everyday consumers, businesses, and retailers to make more conscious purchasing decisions by seeing and understanding the innovative alternatives that are available in the market today.
A piece of innovation that can be owned by anyone
The 80cm x 80cm furoshiki – from its design to production methods – carries a message of creating genuine planet-positive impact. It can be used in many ways – as a lunch bag, reusable gift wrapping, tablecloth, and anything from one’s imagination.
Starting today, this piece of innovation can be taken home by anyone to practice sustainable living in their own way. The furoshiki is now available at The Mills Fabrica’s Impact Retail concept store Fabrica X, and CHAT’s museum shop, CHAT Shop, both located inside The Mills, with a limited amount of 300 pieces, retailing at HKD 420.
Collaboration demonstrates how sustainability can be carried out from concept, lab, to closet
The Mills Fabrica and CHAT were grown out of The Mills, a techstyle, cultural hub consisting of a business incubator, an experiential retail shopfloor, and a community art museum. The two major pillars of The Mills have a joint mission to catalyze innovations in the techstyle and agrifood industries for positive environmental and social impact, at the same time engage in new dialogues and inspirational journeys that interweave contemporary art, design and heritage.
With that in mind, The Mills Fabrica and CHAT invited local design studio Pop & Zebra to create the artwork for the furoshiki, and tapped on its partner Lenzing Group’s flagship product TENCEL™ branded fibers, made by environmentally responsible production processes. The Mills Fabrica incubatee NTX® then used its novel waterless, low carbon textile coloration technology – NTX® Cooltrans® – to print the design onto the fabric. NTX® Cooltrans® is a revolutionary solution that can precisely color almost any textile material without the need for heat, reducing up to 90% in water usage without compromising the fabric’s engineered feel or functional performance. Finally, the furoshiki was finished and packaged by engaging underprivileged groups from the local social enterprise RHYS.
With every aspect of the furoshiki, from the illustration, fibers, printing, production, to packaging method, the collaboration demonstrates that sustainable fashion is not only feasible, scalable, but desirable by consumers.
Cintia Nunes, General Manager, Head of Asia, The Mills Fabrica said: “Jointly led by The Mills Fabrica and CHAT, the ‘SEED TO TECHSTYLE’ furoshiki brings together our ecosystem partners to demonstrate how sustainable fashion can be carried out from concept, lab, to closet. The Mills Fabrica strives to use our efforts – and Hong Kong – as an example of how it’s possible to make positive impact across the value chains of textile and apparel. By bringing together partners who share a common vision for a sustainable future to develop this furoshiki, we can also collectively spread awareness to more consumers and businesses around the world on their consumption and production choices.”
Takahashi Mizuki, Executive Director and Chief Curator, CHAT said: “Since 2019, CHAT has been collaborating with artists, designers, and communities in Hong Kong and overseas to enhance the awareness of creating a sustainable future through art. Having worked with Pop and Zebra in CHAT’s Seed to Textile Programme in 2022, we were familiar with their joyful graphics illustrating the possible futures of a sustainable society. Their practice and designs easily came to mind when working with The Mills Fabrica on the ‘SEED TO TECHSTYLE’ project, which utilises innovative technology to create a furoshiki wrap. Through this collaboration with forward-looking designers, innovators and local partners, we hope Pop and Zebra’s design will spark conversations that will lead to meaningful change.”

The Chief Operating Officer of Hong Kong Life, Ms. Margaret Tsang, said, “In today’s digital era, it’s apt to make use of the power of technology to satisfy different customer needs and deliver meticulous services. Riding on the success of being the first Hong Kong insurer to adopt ‘iAM Smart’ authentication function last year, we take great pride in being the first insurer again to apply another groundbreaking ‘iAM Smart’ technology to our online service this year. When applying for Hong Kong Life’s online insurance products, customers can make use of the ‘e-ME’ Form Filling function from ‘iAM Smart’ and their personal information will be filled in automatically, improving the information accuracy and time efficiency. Moving forward, we will continue to explore and expand the applications of the ‘iAM Smart’, further enhance our digital services to optimize the customer experience.”
