HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach – 8 September 2022 – The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) yesterday signed a cooperation agreement with the China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters (CATTI) Management Center (CATTI Management Center) of the China International Communications Group (CICG). The agreement authorises PolyU to organise the CATTI test in Hong Kong, with a view to uplifting the professional standard of Chinese-English translation in the city. The first Chinese-English translation and interpretation tests will be held in Hong Kong on 5 and 6 November. Interested candidates can register from now until 10 October.

CATTI is the only language test incorporated into China’s national vocational qualification system. Divided into translation and interpretation categories, candidates who pass the test will obtain a Qualification Certificate of Proficiency issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security (MOHRSS) and CICG. The certificate is widely recognised by employers throughout the country. Last year, over 350,000 candidates took the examination.
PolyU has been a close partner of CATTI Management Center since the test’s launch in 2003. As a designated CATTI training centre for nearly 20 years, PolyU has been nurturing skilled translators and interpreters while also promoting and enhancing the impact of CATTI in both Hong Kong and Macau. Previously, candidates in Hong Kong wishing to obtain professional certification were required to take the examination in Guangdong or elsewhere in the Mainland.
Witnessed by Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU and Ms MIN Yi, Director of CATTI Executive Office and Deputy Director of National Committee for Master of Translation and Interpreting Teaching Guidance, CICG, the cooperation agreement was signed by Prof. LI Ping, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, PolyU and Ms FENG Jingyi, Vice President of CATTI Management Center, in a video conference.

Besides supporting professional development in Chinese translation and interpretation, PolyU has been proactively raising the Putonghua proficiency of its students, including through a newly launched sponsorship scheme to encourage students to take standardised Putonghua tests. All PolyU full-time students can apply to take these Putonghua tests at a discount. Additional sponsorship may also be offered based on their overall grades in the tests.
To further increase students’ interest and proficiency in Putonghua, PolyU’s Chinese Language Centre and the Hong Kong Tertiary Putonghua Recitation Society will jointly organise the PolyU 85th Anniversary Performance cum Putonghua Recitation and Demonstration Workshop. The event will be held on 19 November at the Chiang Cheng Studio Theatre in PolyU.

Presented by PROJECT21st, a Hong Kong-based platform for international artistic experimentation, research and new commissions with a focus on music, the project aims to inspire and support creativity in the post-pandemic era, showcase new works created by an international circle of musicians and composers while we all learn to co-exist with Covid-19.
Featuring 7 artists from 4 countries including Jeanne-Marie Conquer, Mario Caroli, Sabrina Ma, Tadashi Tajima, Tosiya Suzuki and Duo Dillon-Torquati, a total of 26 videos with 29 works are featured in this online contemporary music showcase.
‘The videos offer an alternative viewing experience, you could get up close and see how some of the unusual sounds are made with contemporary idioms on different instruments, and get an intimate feeling of the aura of these musicians in performing these daring and evocative works’ said Charles Kwong, a Hong Kong-based composer, curator of Play Further! and Artistic Director of PROJECT21st. Although it wasn’t feasible to bring the artists to Hong Kong to perform live, for contemporary music, these online videos provide another level of understanding to the work presented by musicians, as new sensation was explored through unexpected and innovative ways of music making.
Highlights from the project include Lost in __________ (2020) by Hinako Takagi, the winning work of the international call-for-score for Mario Caroli in by PROJECT21st, which attracted 43 entries from over 20 countries; two new commissioned works Imaginary Beings 1, Imaginary Beings 2 by Charles Kwong dedicated to Jeanne-Marie Conquer (violin), and Tosiya Suzuki and Tadashi Tajima (recorder and shakuhachi); a new commissioned work, without mirror… by Alice Yeung (Hong Kong composer based in The Hague) for Sabrina Ma; as well as Toshio Hosokawa’s new work Mana, written for Tosiya Suzuki and Tadashi Tajima (recorder and shakuhachi).

Ordering food from food delivery platforms has been adopted rapidly by Hong Kong consumers. Noticing the raising trend in food and on-demand grocery deliveries, Reckitt partners with Deliveroo to ensure over 6,000 rider fleets and the food and grocery delivering journey are protected. In addition, Dettol Disinfectant Zones are set up at all eight Deliveroo Editions[2] across Hong Kong to avoid virus transmission from shared surfaces when consumers pick up their takeaways from August. Creating rest assured parcel collection experience with SF Express
According to market research firm Euromonitor International, online sales volume in Hong Kong are projected to reach USD7.9 billion (HKD62 billion) this year, a 13 percent increase from 2021[4]. In view of the growing demand on courier services driven by the increasing online sales volume in Hong Kong, Reckitt partners with SF Express to set up Dettol Disinfectant Zones at all 88 SF Stores across Hong Kong, creating a rest assured parcel collection experience to consumers. Consumers can disinfect their parcels with Dettol Disinfection Spray and sanitise their hands with Dettol Hand Sanitiser upon pick-up, which can effectively kill 99.9%[5] of germs, including New Coronavirus[6]. To influence consumers to always maintain good hygiene behaviours, they can also redeem Dettol Disinfectant Spray from all the SmartRetail reward machines located at three designated SF Express stores[7].

Uber Taxi aims to offer a more efficient commuting services for Hong Kong people who seek better control over their busy lives. A consumer survey conducted by Uber in May 2022 revealed that nine out of 10 respondents feel Uber Taxi helps give them more control over their trips and daily schedules, and eight out of 10 passengers described their Uber Taxi experiences as “generally quite good” and “It’s so amazing I use it frequently”[8].
